ok this weekend i did the following to attempt to fix the 18R

    New points (dizzy cap)
    New Rotor button in dizzy
found out that the AUTO CHOKE as river was mentioning earlier is stuck open and will never close no matter what.

after replacing dizzy cap and button, it ran quite well, but is STILL missing and is also having major issues startin, still turning over and over and not starting

after heaps of attempts it will eventually start but i have to leave it for a few mins after each attempt of starting.

at this point i cannot think of anything else ignition wise / spark wise that can be causing the issues. it must be the carby

River/anyone else, can u please let me know of this place that you can purchase new carbys from ?

or someone else in perth that owns carby cars can you reccommend a place for me to go ?

and everyone else especially , if you have any more ideas on what i can try please tell me as i have a whole day off work tomorrow to work on it!

    cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi,

I got my carby rebuild kit from Nardek, but these guys are in NSW.

    Here is the link anyway....

    http://www.nardek.com.au/default.html

In the meantime I will try and find that company in Perth who did the full replacment.

PS: Grrr... I can't find that Perth mob, which shits me. They must be in your local phone book. They do carbs. Fix them, sell parts, exchange, etc.

    hey

after reading bout the issues/problems ur having. i realied this engine sound exactly the same as my 3tc

there is a thread in tech section "3tc wont start"- have a look at that it may give u a idea- post by oldcorrollas around pg 3 (description of what to do to start any 3tc

as mine has been siting for about 6 months, i ve ran it for ages idling to get it back (or close) to normal after i finealy got it to start

ive replaced everthing consumable, & ive even rebuilt my carby, but mine misses at idle & even when reving, its a pain to start.

so i reccommend buy a can of start u bastard ($11) & try to start it & run it on that, and if u still have problems it cant be fuel, carby, air ratio etc.

easy & cheap test- the start u bastard can also be used to check for an air getting in any where except the carby. eg cracks in manifold

have u set all the carby screws right, or adjusted them to make sure

    thx

John. Just to let everyone know. You have changed your points in the dizzy, you have just changed your dizzy cap. Its doing some tricks though. Im thinking those iginiton points in the dizzy need replacing also.

    Hi,

i would suggest doing the points and condensor - not really difficult to do but if done wrong it won't do anything. Check to see if there is an air leak in the inlet manifold - it will make it run like a dog at idle. Older toyotas are known for manifold nuts falling off/loosening. Check to see there are no cracks in the manifold. Get a compression test done. I would also suggest get a can of carbie cleaner instead of start ya bastard. Will do the same job but def helps with the carby.

Then worry about replacing the carby. Always try those cheap little things as more often then not they will be the problem.

another thing to consider and try
    is the ballast resistor
try bypassing it as it increases the spark
i found that with my 18rg when its cold its the only way i can start it
its now at a point where i am considering wiring in a bypass button

A balast resistor reduces voltage to your points. Without, your points ware out quicker.

    hi
what i meant was just by pass it to see if it will start easier , not premanately, that way it would give an indication if it was the resistor or not its just another way of eliminating suspected causes
    cheers

    Hi,

i think that if you were to do it it would be best to switch it through relays or something so that it is only taken out of the equation when you hit the starter. It would be very easy to forget about it otherwise.

roadkill- i was thinking of start u bastard as the ether in it & that it starts any engine./
also ive tried to start my car on carby cleaner & nothing. start u bastard first go
its also good for finding manifold leaks/ air leaks as you spray it around the manifold & if the revs pick up there is a leak

    thx

SO there are some awesome points above that i will try.. IE. the points in the dizzy (not dizzy cap but the ones under the rotor button)

wonder if they are easy to replace myself though , knowing nothing about dizzys ...

Anyway back on the topic of the ballast Resistor which was also pointed out to me by EldarO ...

Ive taken it off the coil and put my Multimeter on OHMS to test resistance.. i get no reading at all off the two points on the ballast resistor ...

Here are some pics of it ...

IT looks hellllllll fuckin old ...

Am i testing right by putting the MM on OHMS to find out if it has resistance ? (highschool science is failing me right now .... )

    Cheers
    all

just temporarily bypass it. Positive direct to coil etc.

ok just bypassed the resistor ...

still cannot start it , same ol' turn over and over routine and no fire... if i kept trying for probably 10 mins of trying to start i might have got it going ,,,, which means problem still exists ...
