    Default 4age 20V valve removal tool/s?

Just wondering if anyone has had any success with any valve removal tools (spring compressors). I have a snap on one (magnetic type) and it is too large in diameter to be used on my silvertop 4age 20V head. The others I have seen are C-clamp jobs and they leave bugger all or no room for retainer removal.

If you are using one that works beautifully then please let me know.

This type has been mentioned by others.
The stock 4-valve's are so light that I'd try using a notched plastic pipe or a good retainer fit/self-centering metal pipe to remove & install. The keepers/collets may be jamming the valve in its retainer, so a little hammer tap on the retainer with a large enough socket will break that taper free.
Scoring/scratching the follower bore is the most important thing to me, and I don't think that it's the compressor that's important, other then the types/designs that aren't for OHC's, it's the adaptor it'll need to get down in the lifter bore without scraping it & also has enough clearance to your fingers or needlenose/duckbill pliers.

Ok this site specifies that it is good for engine's with 4 valve's per cylinder and as long as you are not using it on valves with multi-grooved retainers.

Can anyone verify that this "toyotool" works well with the 20-valve heads?

    Any others?

i have the snap on unit, to make it work with the 20v i had to grind the OD down quite a bit as the buckets are very small so if you grind down the od of both the removal tool and the installer bit then you should be sweet, you will have to grind about 30mm up the tool so you dont break shit

thats the one there^^ probably work the 60 or so bucks removed the valves in about 15 hour mins and back in in about 30 odd,

also when installing them use padding between your hand and the tool i lost feeling in half my hand cos i pinched a nerve

it sold for about $200 on auction... toyota retail is more like 500-600?

looks easy to make one tho
G-clamp with longer lever to turn, (good quality so it is not stiff), and a cut out socket or tube on the end... looks easy to make..

    I am with Corollas:

However I strongly recommend not using a "proper" valve removing tool to hold down a peice like this and instead using a G-clamp as theres a significantly lower chance of launching a collet.

I have made a new tool now on a lathe and it works great

I've found a butchered spark plug socket usually works, you might be able to hack up a useless sized deep socket if you've got one.

hey thats pretty smart thinking as most of the spark plug sockets that come with socket sets are rubbish anyway

I used a G clamp style one with an opened up bit of pipe like sam q. Then used some grease on a screwdriver to hold the collets on the end while i put them back together. Wasnt the fastest or least frustrating method though.

hey guys I ended up making myself a slightly more proper tool that I thought I would show some pics of just incase it would help anyone. I made it mostly up on the lathe and then just used a grinder to chop the window, nothing overly complex.

It has a step in the bottom to cup the outside of the retainer and a step in the top to cup the G clamp end.

In action, to put the collets back in I did a method I dont think I have heard of before; I put both collets into the retainer, clamped it down and used small picks to keep them in place as I kept tightening them up, harder than it sounds! I should of done your trick Leeroy but I didnt think of that.
