    Linden,

One idea I have seen used in a certain 3s based rally car that is run out of Canberra, is a simple upside down V (I think it was a small piece of angle iron cut to size) just below the pickup positioned to allow it to hit the pickup and bend the pickup up if a significant hit was taken on the sump (I did mentioned this was a rally car didn't I?).

Apparantly they has a test day failure when the driver took a big hit on the sump, bent the pan up and prevented oil from being picked up...instant engine failure. Subsequently with this mod they haven't had problems with this because the upside down V always maintains approx 5mm of spacing between the pickup and the pan.

That way you can keep the pickup nice and low and avoid the issue if the pan is bent.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Simple and effective. On early mercedes V8's they had a design that consisted of what was basically 4x 5mm high lugs on the bottom of a very hard rubber grommet which seated onto the end of the pickup. This had a similar effect if the sump was damaged.

Ok, some pics of the completed sump.

I modified the area behind the pick slightly so that it was easier to seal the baffles against.
I have also welded in the stock sump plug and machined and welded on a port for the dipstick.
Last pic is a close up of the welds. I very happy with the way it has turned out, and tests with diesel (whilst checking for leaks) show very promising results with respect to splashing and retention of fluid in the centre pickup area.

    Completed sump.

Inside top baffle plate (creased to direct flow)

    Some build pics:
    Internal gate/solid baffles

Pickup height above floor of sump, approx 10-12mm (to actual pickup pipe, not strainer)
