    Default conversion legalities

hey guys. i tried some hard searching on the old forum for this sortof thing, but had a lot of trouble finding anything. i'm doing a 4age conversion on my AE86, I live in VIC, and i need info on what i have to do to get it all engineered and roadworthy. i tried ringing an engineer, and he told me i need to know the emmisions of this engine in this car, or i need to get the emissions test done for $3000. i'm hoping someone out there has been in the same situation as me, and could tell me what they did, or if anyone knows how to get the information i need. any info would be vastly appreciated.

    cheers

the pits will have that sort of information. When I did my 3sgte conversion, the guys at the pits give the engineer the standard engine info. so do the conversion get it engineered then mod it up. if it comes as a standard engine for that chassis you don't need engineer. your power must be within 25% of the factory standard. otherwise will definatly need engineer.
Use the internet it is your friend, you should be able to get all the info you need off of it.

Pits = Vic Roads inspection station.
If it feels good "DO IT" Unless it harms others.(or upsets the RTA)

There was a rule a few years ago about the type of engine you could put into the car, like the donor engine could only be 4 years before or after manufacture of your car's manufacture year. For example, my 1999 RAV4 took in a 1995 model GT-Four ST205's 3S-GTE engine and running gear, and was still legal. I don't know if this is still in effect, or even if it applies in VIC. This was to keep emissions output in check. I still haven't done an emissions test on mine, but the cops had no probs with it when they looked at it.

Mine's engineer-certified for EVERY mod done on it, and the cops usually won't debate the fact if they pull you over to defect you... just don't act like a tool if they DO pull you over and keep your counsel, all should be good.

Ring Vicroads. 13 11 71. Them and a registered automotive engineer are the only people to listen to on this subject.

However having said that I will add that if the engine you fitted was ever sold in Australia then getting it passed on emmissions should be simple. It must have passed emmissions to have been sold here in the first place. It gets tricky with engines that were never released here (eg 4AGZE).

the words "emissions test" should not be uttered - ever. that is one way to be seriously screwed over.

simplest thing to do is to ring said engineers. don't tell them anything specific about your car or who you are.

tell them engine is same as what was fitted into ae82 (close enough) & you have all required emissions parts with the engine & see what they say.

you may have to swap your ecu for one out of an aussie car (big deal) & have a co test at idle & noise test. also verify no error codes are present. nothing super difficult
