Go and get yourself a L50 , shit box also
or a G52 from 84 onwards . yes you have to move the crossmember back a bit but you wont regret it after your done .
10 times nicer to drive .

I currently have a 1981 18r powered 4wd hilux, it has an L40 4 speed gear box.
I am going to put a 22r in place of the 18r and while I am at it I Would like to also put in a 5 speed g'box. I have searched around toymods and googled a heap and found that an L5X would be a replacement but am not too sure where to find one. However I do have a W52 from a 2wd hilux and would prefer to use this, rather then buying a new gearbox.
So my question is, will the w5x fit in the place of the L40? as far as fitiing to the transfer case goes, I am fairly confident of it fitting to the 22r
Help appreciated, thanks.

dave: does the transfer case from an older 4WD bolt onto the back of an early 2WD G52? Or do you need a transfer from a 4WD that was attached to a G52?
reason i ask is that out in the paddock is an '81 4WD hilux oil burner in need a new engine/box (and preferably petrol powered).
you can have my 4 speed when I am done with it if you want it, no charge, not even beerOriginally Posted by thechuckster

Thanks,.
lol ... having travelled on highway at a max of 85k in the use - 'cause that's all it would do - i'd say the 4sp is only good for a boat anchor![]()
Unfortunatly the 2WD output shaft is longer than the 4WD one so it wont go , all you can use is the gears inside the box.
Dave
So a 4wd G52 will fit in place of my L40?
Or will I need the G52 transfer case as well?
Yes the transfer as well as shortining the rear tailshft
Dave
dave, one last question: the G52 is used by the diesels only? or both petrol/oil burners?
