Default Project ae82 Seca to Twincharge or not

    Greatings and salutations people,

Am new to toymods, but have been around moded toyota's for as long as i care to remember, having owned a number of early celicas and spent way to much on them but i loved every min. of it, which bring me to the topic of this thread.

After 6 long years i have been bitten by the bug again, this time with a ae82 twincam seca
in 100% stock form that i picked up for a big $700 dollars. My question is I would like to do something left of the middle with this one. Was thinking v6 out of camery but not sure every one does the 3s or 4agte/gze just want some thing different, so now i through it open to the public for thoughts or any different ideas.

After a bit of searching and thinking, i think the camery v6 may just be a little to tall but i did fine another option 4agzte i had seen in the past a HKS kit to transform a gze to run a t3 for high end and supercharger for the bottom end of the rev range, boost controled to cut out the supercharger at the point where the turbo cuts in, so you get the best of both worlds. Has any one done this conversion, is it worth it or should i just stick with a 4agte

    Found this quote on toysport:

The U.S. 4AG-ZE in the MR2 developed 140HP with the supercharger and with strictly bolt-on modifications produced 188HP. There was available a Twin Charger kit from HKS that developed 210HP and after further modifications produced in excess of 350HP! Also available was the HKS 5AG kit (not a Toyota designation), which included a stroked crank and over-size pistons for 1720cc.

any information will be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

wow id be keen on that, was thinking about twincharging mine too i mean, a t3/4 is cheap as now, or even a t25.. witht he sc12..=)...couldn't you do it yourself though? only twin poiping into inlet manifold, just run a normal 4agte setup but leave super charger running through the turbo's intercoooler, then plumb them both into the same intake?? i think the opnly probvlem, would obviously treating a clutch system to the turbo and/or havuig the sc pull from say 1000rpm to 2850 rpm, then the turbo kicks in? thatd work i think...

put something newer in it like a 1zzfe or 2zzge, turbocharged if you wish...

I'm currently keeping an eye out for a cheap AE71 or AE82 sedan to put the spare 1zz in my shed into run by an adaptronic ecu.

With the FWD AE82 you have more clearance for the exhaust than you do in an AE92 or AE101 etc due to the subframe design. The 1zz in NA form with an intake and 2.25" exhaust puts out as much power at the wheels as most NA 20V 4age's too.

The sump on the ZZ's sits slightly lower from the crank centerline than the 4A sump does, but the cam cover height is the same between the 4A and ZZ's when measured from the crank centerline. The 1zz's come bolted to a C52 gearbox, so using the three AE82 gearbox mount brackets and engine mounts, you've got most of the hard work completed to fit the engine, just a custom mount at the timing cover end is required...

Choose the engine you want based upon the desired outcome of the project.

All the above noted engines have their pros and cons.

Are you doing this project because you actually like the AE82 Seca or because you got it cheap?

You need to do some more research on that idea you have there

I undertaking the project on the seca because i like the car, having owned one before with the usual mods: lowered, wheels etc etc. It was a hoot to drive, getting it cheaps was just a bonus.

i think i will go with the twincharged route, after a bit more diging around i found that using a 4agze engine, getting a custom fab. turbo manifold and plumbing the turbo to the air bypass valve on the supercharger will probable have to run through an intercooler first (heated air from turbo is a good way to kill sc) then wire in boost controler or RPM switch to cut the sc just as the turbo spools up, will use a t3 as if i go smaller boost comes on sooner and defets the purpose. there will be other things that need to be done along the way but will tend to them as they turn up.

But feed back from anyone that has done this or has more insite to the change would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Good reason.

Search this site and the net for a twincharged datto that a bloke races here in Aus. It's the only successful i.e. well performing twincharged 4A I have ever come across (not to say others don't exist).

Do a bit more research too as T3's are oldschool turbos and the 4A twincharge setup comes from back in the day when turbo technology was nothing like it is now and peoples understanding of forced induction was limited - hence back then most turbo charged things were laggy, non-responsive and only offered mediocre mid range power.

In most cases nowadays with the right turbo selection you'd be hard pressed to find a benefit in the added complexity and weight of a twin charged setup on a 4A.

I'm not saying don't do it, just saying the results may not be that rewarding considering the cost of doing it right.

that particular twincharge has the turbo running thru the SC fulltime.

i agree, with a modern new turbo (not modern off some random car) ie garrett GT series, you can get enough response to warrant not needing twincharge.

where twincharge can excel (imo) is when you want high boost that will leave the turbo too laggy. ie, say 20-40psi. that way, you still have the car running at maybe 10-15psi with the SC, and then when turbo finally spools (faster with SC) you get up to your desired boost.

cost+complexity+weight = downside of twincharge, and if you are only planning to run low boost (under 20psi?) then it may be hard to justify.

you could also look to twinscrew style SC, but their cost usually prohibits their use, as does limited experience and know-how..

fwiw, you need to understand that turbo is a pressure device, and SC is a displacement device.
if you cut SC when you get boost from turbo, you will suddenly have a massive hole.
at the very least, you need to throttle back the SC until it is providing no flow, and the turbo has taken over. just cutting it off will be horrible

Cheers for the input ppl i think just the sheer amount of money i would have to inject into the whole twinchared thing in getting it to run properly and reliably would far out weigh the benifits of a well setup system, but the wow facter would have been great, so to that i think that i will just stick with a good 4agte setup, there are plenty of good examples on this site. once again thanks
