    Default ta22 conversion

hey i have a 74 ta22 celica with a 3tgte engine it makes good power but i would like 2 put in a six cylinder. i have looked into it and another good cheap engine a 1ggte 2 litre 6 cylinder, im not so familliar with this engine and dont know how easy it would be 2 get performance parts for it or where i could get one from and am concerned about the age of it. i have read that u can put in a sr20 into a ta22 but im over having a 4 cylinder and would like 2 put in a 6 cylinder, would it be possible to put in a rb20 as it is the same size as the 1ggte and is easier 2 get performance parts for it and it isnt as old. i know that there will be work involved putting in a rb20 into a toyota but would it be worth it in power wise or should i just put in a sr20? could u suggest any other conversions that i could get good power from like a turbo 20 valve or a 3sgte? but i would like a 6 cylinder thanks for any help

I would seriously consider a V6 due to length and weight, Preferably an Alloy one, But I have heard you can fit the straights, but A Lot of Modifying and Work,

I would reccomend sticking with a toyota 4, But if you must choose a Light V or Straight 6, remembering the Extra weight can upset your Handling

    Hi mrta22,
You in brisbane area? We have a couple of 1Gs here youre more than welcome to come measure up. But the 1GGTE, or most inline 6 engines, will be a major conversion and you may have to move your firewall back to get them to fit. The ADM TA22s, dubbed the "short nose" are a fair bit shorter than the 23s and 28s, hence why most people stick with the 4cylinders. Also you could probably get better performance out of a 4cylinder anyway, as you wont lose any front end handling like you could with an inline 6, as it can change the weight distribution over the front wheels depending on how its mounted.
Also the 1G for example is only a 2L 6cyl, so its not really bigger than the likes of the 3S or sr20, and its hard to find some bits for 1G engines locally. Import places can get you 2nd hand parts but for the likes of gaskets etc. its a bit more difficult.

I too was interested in putting a 6 in mine, but I was looking at going a V6 for obvious reasons. Toyota options I came across were the 1VZ with a cast iron block i believe, and the 1MZ which is an alloy block. Dont know what performance parts are available for these. I really would like to go with a 2GR alloy lexus V6 but its early days for these engines and I imagine if you did find one it would be an expensive exercize, you may find it doesnt fit anyway!

You also have to consider that the 22 is also narrower width-wise than the 23s and 28s, so theres less room in that direction for a V engine.

IMO if youre chasing power figures more than anything and want access to a wide range of aftermarket parts, go a SR20, or 3S. You'll have a bit of work to do but it has been done. Also do plenty of searching around these forums and on the net, there are people out there that have done these conversions and can give you more info than I could.

    Hope that helps
PS if you are in brisbane i'll PM you details of next celica cruise when I organise it

Hiya i tend to agree with sillycar, 1g do fit but with a lot of metal fab. work. If its some thing different you are after than go for ether the 2.5 or 3l v6 camery motor the result would turn a few heads, it would still take a bit of work to mount the motor but would be well worth it as i don't think i have seen one yet, but this is just my opinion

    Hi,

i've seen the 1mz in a sw20 mr2. If it fits there it should be easily into the ta22. Gotta be careful of engine size though as from memory you can only go 3cc per kg which screws you in a ta22 as they are something like 970kg. If going turbo i think that you are limited to 2.5cc per kg. So that means no 1jzgtte either. RA2x's are over the 1000kg so whilst only a small difference it open up alot of options. You really need to make sure engine changes are done legally as if you have an accident - even if it's not your fault - your insurance company won't want to know a thing about.

What makes you want 6cyls anyway?? Improved torque?? HP can be very similar with a good setup. If you just spent the money that it's going to cost you to do a transfer on you're 3tgte you'll probably get better results for the dollar spent.

Dana - when's that cruise hapnin' now that i got a sleeka again!!!
