    Default MTEU/MZ10 soarer alternator problem

Okay well basically the alternator on my MZ10 soarer has packed up.

It's a mitsubishi unit, and from what I've read they're unreliable at best, and the voltage regulators are what crap out on them. (Diodes are sweet)

So the question is.... What's the best way to sort this out?

Is there a similarly fitting alternator that is 'plug and play'?

I've got a 1GEU alternator here that looks like I could make work, but it'll need a different plug end, and it's 3 wire instead of 2.

I've read that the third wire is 'check battery' or something, is it necessary to have this wired up, and if so, what is it for/what does it do?

Although if anyone can suggest a suitable 2 wire alternator that fits straight in, is cheap as chips, and is reliable... +rep to you.

    Hi,

I have had plenty of fun with flakey alternators.
But to make almost any alternator work you can get away with 1 wire (usually)

A good way to test the unknown unit is to get a battery, croc clip the chasis to –ve , the charge post to +ve, get a small 12v incandescent lamp (like a parker lamp) hook one end to the +ve terminal, use a clip / probe to poke into the connections on the alternator. While connecting the unit up, turn the alternator, it should become stiff to turn when you are on the right connection.

This is not always %100 fool-proof, with some units they may require a second “switched” +ve connection to be made to the alternator plug before working.
Using a lamp & wires is a safe way to make a quick assessment of the state of the unit, if anything shorts out it will only light-up the lamp.

Of course if you have the service manual handy that makes life a little easier.

If the regulator is the problem there is every possibility that Ingrams sell their own improved unit.

    hey there

to make a 3 wire work with the 2 wire system..

the 2 wires are, 12v signal, and warning light for dash

3 wire is, 12v signal, warning light, 12v ign

just run the 2 wires where they should go and add the 3rd wire going from the plug to the 12v terminal on the alternater this will work perfectly

Bah, I think it's not the right alternator for the car?

I've got a pair of MEU alternators here, and they're 3 plug nippondenso.

So I'm trying to get one of these working, but have NFI what the pin outs are for on the alternator plug.

    theres E, F, and N....

E being a white wire with a black stripe (I'm guessing earth, but surely not?)

    F being a red wire,

and N being a blue wire.

Does anyone know what the EF&N are assigned to, I cant for the life of me find a wiring diagram for these older alternators.

    Thanks

Those are for externally regulated alternators.
