    Default 3sge pinking

    Hey
I have a problem where after a couple of minutes of driving the car will ping (It's a crackly sort of noise like bouncing a golf ball on concrete really quickly). It goes away if I floor it (although the exhaust noise could be covering it up). The same noise seems to appear when I take my foot off the gas, as the engine revs down. Its getting louder and I adjusted my timing to 4 degrees (instead of the stock 10) and it didn't help much.

If anyone has any ideas, post 'em.

The idea is not to double up on threads so its easier when searching etc. Check out this thread, you may find your answers here. Good Luck!

Dude, that sounds WAY more like big end or main bearings!!! Especially given that it only happens on light throttle application rather than heavy.

Don't drive the car any further than you have to, take it to a local garage and get their opinion, or if you are game get underneath the car and get the sump off to have a look. It's a big job though.

    Exhaust flange gasket?
I know it might sound funny, but I've seen it cause similar symptoms. Took me forever to figure it out.

If it is an exhaust flange gasket you should be able to figure it out by all the black crap all over your engine Just start the car and have a listen with the bonnet up, play with the throttle linkage to rev it lightly and try to get more of an idea where the noise is coming from.

Depends how badly it's blown.. on stock manifolds they often have a lip that the gasket sits inside, so even if it does blow out, shit doesn't tend to go everywhere.

And chances are the car won't ping/make the noise when it's idling because it's under no load!

hehehe - ahh that's so dodgy But effective if you still need to move the car on and off a trailer or whatever (if, of course, it is a big-end or main bearing isse)

When I start her up she's a little noisy on the tappets, but that goes away after about 30 seconds when the oil pressure gets up. I have also changed the oil a number of times and it doesn't seem to change the noise.
One mechanic told me it was my resonator, so he changed the centre section of the exhaust pipe and that did dick all except empty my wallet of $150.

RWDboy do you know any decent mechanics around the Adelaide city who aren't too dodgy? I have spoken to Fours n More but they charge you to talk to them now. They are just too busy to chat.
I just can't seem to find any decent mechanics around.

I have been driving about 80Kms per day for over a 2 years now and the noise has only got a little louder. Could it really be big end? Wouldn't that be a grinding noise?

About the exhaust - I got extractors recently with a new gasket so it's not leaking from there.

Gimme a p.m. or jump on MSN and maybe I can come around and have a quick look? I know the sound of a effed big-end bearing quite well.

30 seconds to build oil pressure is not so good.. esp for 3SGE...
it should get pressure up in a few seconds... perhaps your oil pump is rooted, or something is blocked?
can you check the oil pressure?

Just go up to the mechanics and say "Knock knock!"

    "who's there"

    "Big end bearing "

If you feel confident, do the work yourself... you'll save money and possibly time. Fours'n'More are good but they are just way too busy these days. In fact, i'd say you'd be best ripping out the engine, checking the oil pump (I believe these can be checked for clearances with a feeler gauge) and checking the crank/bearings.

Did you notice any metal shavings in the oil?
