Default How to change the inner drive shaft boot on mx83 Cressida

    1. Jack car up
    2. Take wheel off

    3. non existent.

    4. Undo 4 14mm bolts on the backing plate. 2 are pictured and there is obviously another 2 on the other side.

    5. Undo the 6 14mm bolts where the drive shaft connects to the diff.

    6. Jack the disk brake up a bit so that the drive shaft is horizontal.
    7 & 8. non existent
    9. Remove the split pin from the centre nut and take the lock nut off.
    10. Undo the large centre nut. I used a 1.25" socket but I think it is actually metric but it worked. (FYI mine was on that tight that we couldn't hold it so we slapped the wheel back on and put the handbrake on)
    11. Once this nut is off the drive shaft can be tapped out with a hammer and chisel.

    12. Place drive shaft in a vice.

    13. Chop the 2 clamps holding the boot on.
    14. I just sliced the old boot with a stanley knife.

    15. Remove the grease cap thingy to reveal the CV's.
    16. Use circlip pliers to remove the circlip.
    17. Use hammer and chisel to punch the shaft out and get the CV's off.
    18. Put new rubber boot on the shaft.
    19. Put the shaft back in the vice.
    20. Use the same 1.25" socket place on top of the CV's and lightly tap them back onto the shaft until it is on all the way.

    21. Put the circlip back on (you will know the cv's and circlip are on properly if the circlip goes into the groove)

    22. Grease the CV's.
    23. Replace the grease cap.

    24. Put clamps (or zipties) on the ends of the boot.

    25. Replacement is the opposite of above

    Hope that helps.

I don't know if this is the "correct" way of doing it but it worked for me and I couldn't find a write up on how to do it so I thought I would do one.

If you break your car, it isn't my fault

Step 7, wheel chocks? The entire arse end is off the ground. Plus from memory you dont have to take the disc off to get to the centre bore nut, you can just remove the dust cover cap and tap the spline out.

Infact you shouldnt need to take any of the brake stuff off. Just unbolt it from the hub, and from the diff, and tap the sucker out.

Toyota seem to use that white grease on every kind of bearing or joint in the suspension.

it's also good to match-mark the CV housing to the shaft and rose-joint to the shaft before removing it to install the new boot, this ensures it all goes back together the way it came apart and is not mis-aligned.
