Default 73 Corona with 12R Will 18R fit?

Hey guys my flatmate has pretty much bought the Corona fs on here with a blown 12R.

Now I know with most Toyota engines like T series, that they all share the same block. Can anyone outline the differences between the 2 engines.

Not sure what the ruling is with the RTA these days and if we can go from a 1600 to a 2L aswell?

    Thanks in advance.

1st, its only a 5hp difference between a 12r and an 18r i wouldnt even bother telling the rta,

    NA 18R will be engineerable,

the rona should be borderline for a 1j conversion. (similar weight im assuming to 23/28...)

Engineerable? The idea is cause I have seen a bunch or them on here for free Also I dont like our chaces of getting another 12R? I had never seen one before

This is my flatmates car and it is to be done a very limited budget so no 1J's etc, just want a reliable daily.

Yeah definately interested mate, and newy is worth the trip. Still interested in seeing if I can give it a bit more poke with an 18R legally but open to all options.

    cheers

The pre RT104 Corona came out with the 18R 2 litre in Japan.

I was given an RT81 with an 18R conversion - it was just a weekend knock up job so was pretty rough and ready. You'll need to make up some engine mounts. You'll need a mid sump 18R (no idea what they're from - RA23??) but for an ideal fit you'll ideally need to tap the front bit in with a sledge hammer or better still shave about an inch off the front of the sump. This will allow you to move the motor forward so you have good clearance between the firewall, steering drag links and the front subframe.

US RT81 had an 18R. Maybe hop on to www.japanesenostalgiccar.com and try to source sump and mounts??

Easiest option is to fit a 12R. I whipped out the 18R and put in a good running 12R.

Just be careful when sourcing 12Rs - there are 3 mains and 5 mains 12Rs. You need the 3 mains one, recognisable by the block cowling around the flywheel.

Ahh bugger so certainly not a bolt in job, sounds do-able tho,but if this 12r comes through we will probably just go with that.

thanks for the info very helpful.

    cheers

Definately do-able, just not quite bolt in with local bits. Didn't go any better than the 12R that's in there now too.

I should add, the guys used a 5 speed (W50) needed a new gearbox cross member to make that happen too.

Yeah certainly harder than I assumed however with the price of 18R's going for these days as in for free it makes it a much more viable option

Will the current 4 speed GB bolt up?

Yep, but you'll need to do those mods to the sump. Also will need a different bellhousing - 18R to W40/50 - but they're everywhere.
