    Default 18r turbo

hi to all i am new here to this forum.

I am in the process of building a hilux rn41 turbo. The motor is a 18R which has most of the things done. i got the motor with the hilux when i bought it so all the hard work has been done .. Just wanted to ask if any one has done one 18R turbo up if they could send some pictures also i wanted to know how are these motors in performance wise.
    Cheers

i have already done this - would advise against it

-you have turbo and intake on one side so plumbing is a nightmare
-the dizzi has no boost retard so you have ignition issues to resolve (you need high static timing for lower compression but this is the enemy of boost and locked timing makes it a poor performer)
-a suck-thru turbo is the simplest to setup but you have no opportunity for intercooling so water injection is required
-make sure turbo manifold is well braced otherwise that much weight hanging off 4 bolts will eventually start to sag and make gaskets leak

If you can, change to an 18RG so you can get access to sensible EFI (and thus timing control) and you separate the intake and zorst.

My site below has some pics of my setup.

i wouldn't bother with an expensive reg tho have to admit that the malpassi is good for carbi setups - being low-pressure carb, you'll want flow not pressure. I had a big/noisy carter pump supplying fuel from the tank.

... good luck with the motor - they're strong but run out of puff >5k (well, mine does). I went EFI and smaller (ex RB20 T3 ball-bearing turbo) so i could get boost earlier and not so violently.

edit: having a proper turbo manifold (individual ports feeding well-designed collector) rather than a log manifold helps as well.

btw: where are you taking the oil supply for the turbo? oil-filter housing or below the oil-pressure sender?

was just curious about the oil feed - a few old-school 18RG guys i know are big fans of taking it from the filter housing, as in theory it's closer to the oil pump. My block came with another port below the oil-pressure sender hole so i used that.

you'll find a big difference between the stock 18R and one with a hairdryer on it

Mine went from 2 door slug to able to carry 4-people plus luggage yet be climbing at >160k (on a private rural road of course).

    Gday,

I contemplated doing the same thing to my RA28 "just cause I can", but sensibility got the better of me and I went with the 18R-GTE route.

My only suggestion here, is you could improve it by changing the carb out for an EA foulcan CFI injection setup. The throttlebody should be plenty big enough as would the injectors, then you can run an oxygen sensor for feedback, and get something resembling fuel economy, and by programming the ECU properly, you can eliminate dead spots and protect against engine damage to a much greater extent. The MegaSquirt 2 ECU will be more than up to the task, and not cost much either.

That's my suggestions (well the ones that don't say ditch it for an 18R-GTE anyway), but good luck with it, hopefully it should last you quite some time and provide the torque you require. Oh, a decent cam might be helpful too, maybe try Tighe cams in the greater Brisvegas region.

very nice setup - old school but it'll do the job (and good skids)

    i'm assuming there's a waste-gate hiding beneath the turbo?

and you're going to run some kind of water injection?

note: you'll probably want another vacuum port ahead of the turbo so the brake M/C and PCV valve on the rocker cover never see boost.

Looks pretty clean mate. I still think that carb could be replaced with an injection set.
