Hey all

Just wondering whats required in the way of pedal boxes or clutch pedal, also what about the master cylinder?

If ya put a r154 behind it what type of tailshaft will fit? or does it need to be custom?

On a side note, are there plug in ecu options available for the 1jz? If so does the variant models of the engine matter?

Hi mate

Apart from your R154, You'll need a clutch pedal, cluth master cylinder, smaller brake pedal (recommended you get a Jzx81 unit also). John at ImportBitz MIGHT have some stuff you need. There might be some more little things (its late and i just got home from work)

Im pretty sure you could get your stock tail shaft shortend to suit your conversion as the stock Auto ones are too long ,correct me if im wrong. Or your could find a 1 piece option which are around if you look hard enough

There is alot of info here so dont forget to search first, ask questions later...

For a purely bolt in set up regarding pedal boxes/trim bits only as gearboxes/tailshafts suit different engines, you would be looking at manual GX81 (1G-GTE + W58) or a diesel model (LX80 i believe, no idea engine and gearbox). I dont know if the GX81 driveshaft will fit. Most people trying to go this way find it very hard to source parts and all you would ideally use is the complete clutch set up (with the MC to suit your gearbox) and brake pedal. The parts can also be bought individually from Toyota (i dont know if they are still available) and look here for the part numbers and prices (when originally inquired upon - long time ago now).

Dont forget that you would need to convert from the foot handbrake to the normal one on the centre console - but MX83 gear is fine for that.

There are other clutch pedal boxes you can modify to suit. JZA70 is most used - takai & Brendan-m2 are the most recent to have done these conversions (click names to go to members ride threads).

If you do want to go for a R154 - you are going to need to modify the trans tunnel to fit (too small as only made to suit the auto/W58 box).

I did this conversion myself around six months ago all the parts are available new from toyota cost me $400 for the lot except the brake pedal I just cut and filed mine nice and cut the auto rubber and put it back on saves money so the parts I got were all GX81 as jzx81 never came factory manual the manual lines even clip in pro and everything was very easy and smooth to use the genuine parts and as big zop said cressie hand brake setup is fine.
U can see various second hand r154 around for sale at 1200ish.
The down side is pull type clutches arent cheap I got a brand new HD single plate exedy for my mate from japan for $900 which included everything, but my suggestion is go to twin plate and convert to push type as theres alot more clutch options open if u fry youre twin plate once you have the push type setup there.
As for the tailshaft had a custom one piece unit off a mate cost $380 to make and works like any tailshaft should

Hey guys,
I've gone the manual turbo mx83 route (R154 box).
For pedals etc i used all GX81 stuff, same as Jzxbenno.
For the tailshaft you can use the front half of an ma70 supra turbo (R154 box) tailshaft onto which the centre support/bearing of the x81/x83 shaft needs to be put onto.
This then bolts up to the back half of the auto x81/x83 shaft. from memory the dust collar on the tailshaft (where it slides into the box) needed to be trimmed down slightly.
Take all of the above to a tailshaft mob and get it balanced and bob's your uncle.
i managed to pick up an MA70 tailshaft for $150 from a wreckers, just make sure that it is the MA70 turbo manual tailshaft if you go that way.
