Default 2004 "G" LSD centre will fit into RN41 Diff? (yes BUT)

Hi Just picked up a 2004 Hilux "G" LSD diff spool and it will not fit into my RN41 housing.

The problem seem to be the original axles are to long and I cant do up the 4 axle bolts on one side, the picture shows the differance (10mm).

    Has anyone seen this before.

Can't say I've seen it before, the only guidance i can offer is that I bought a G series LSD of a similar era, it would have possibly even been an '05, anyway.. I put that into an rn27 diff and, according to the guys who put it in, it wasn't a problem?

Apparently the hilux axles are hardened and are a complete c'nt to do that too.

    dam bloody tuff toyota stuff

you might have to go to wreckers with a tape measure awesome fun !

in the first shot is the center in the same position as 2nd shot or do you have to run a spacer for the crown wheel ?

The two picture were taken without moving anything.

The left hand side is the side which has the bolts all the way in, so this must be moving the centre to the right.

is there a left and right axle or are they the same length?

I saw someone paid $300 to cut and heat treat the axles. failing an easy fit I will talk to diff tech on monday

Looked at trimming 10mm off the axle spline? Often there is enough extra spline to still get full engagement, have heard of this issue before with fitting LSD's (was not for a Hilux though) as there is a pin or something that stops the axle going in as far. You need to be sure thats what is stopping it going all the way in though.

No not thinking about trimming the axles just yet, spoke to Diff Technics & they indicated it should fit.

Will take some mesurements tonight and check the overall length, just in case I have the longer late axles.

from memory the late hilux diffs are 1430 wide this extra length may be to clear these LSD centres,

this is what happened to my diff when i put the lsd in, it needed the taper extended down the axle

im picking it up later this week, i'll let you know how i go

it was about 4mm shy of fitting, by the looks of the pics its about the same as yours

my axles were sortened by about 14mm as i converted a 6 stud to 5 stud

i extended my splines with a 1mm cutting disc and this didnt make any difference either

i would recomend putting some grease on the splines and taper and see where it foul before doing anything drastic

This to is what i was told when i swapped from open center to LSD... Originally i had 1410 axles go into my 1370 diff, so had to shorten the axles, i found that the axles were only captive 35mm of the 55mm provided, and when i asked if it would be okay to lathe them down, was told if i intended to go lsd later, give myself about 10mm extra room to play with as the lsd center is slightly thicker then the open center.

I shortened down my axles 10-15mm each side and didnt bother resplining... They have held up to all my abuse and are completely captive still...

Have a look how much spline you actually need and you should be sweet...

measuring up the diff on the floor its 1420mm drum to drum with this LSD, but looking at the LSD there is a spring which sits at the centre of the unit,
I fitted it back and I was able to tighten the bolts a bit more I didnt do them up all the way, it looked as if this spring was getting compressed!.

any one know of an exploded view of the G series diif ? , just wanting to know if the axle should contact the inner stops, (well they look like stops)

Smokey, did you say there was a diff measuring 1400?

Yeh i thought it was 1400 for a while, but i think that just imghta been bad measuring on my mates account! As to make the 1410 axles fit, i had to take 30mm off, so i assume it must be closer to 1370...

    Auto 351,

This is a common issue when putting Non LSD axels into LSD's (T series diffs do it too)

Using a Drop saw or an angle grinder just cut some off the end and redo the taper, its not difficult and you can easily do it yourself. No need to respline as there is heaps of extra spline on the axles. I cut off 4mm a side for the RA28 (above the 6mm a side I shortened it) My TA22 hilux axles were shortened 13mm a side with no need for resplining.

make sure you lengthen the taper first as you will loose your centre when you shorten the axle
