3Y and 4Y are a direct bolt in replacement and the 4Y is 2.2 litres not a great improvement though. Cheap a chips for a new motor over here. Other options are 18rg or something bigger. You have so much choice over there across the ditch.
cheers
hey i need some advice, i just brought an old 88' 2wd hilux for 300bucks, it's only done 165,000km, but the engine uses 4litres of oil to 50litres of petrol, im sure its not helping with global warming!
so i was wondering what engines to look for that will bolt in without to much hasstle? it has a 3y in in now, do the 3y&4y's from the later model hiluxs bolt up to the gearbox etc?
or would i be better off to just do the bearings, rings, and valve stem seals? i have no idea where all the oil is going? its not dripping on the ground thats for sure!
also whats the knock while its idleing? it goes away under acceleration..and is very quiet while de-accelerating..very anoying..lol
any help would be very much appreciated, im new to the petrol game, so need all the help i can get![]()

Well..... there are SOOO many engine options!
I'll list them in order of their ease-of-conversion and power output
- Direct replacement Y-series engine. Yes it will bolt to your current box
- 18RG - however these engines are getting old and most engines need a recondition
- 1G-GTE.... 2L twin turbo. Strong engine, good power, and almost bolt in for a hilux. PLenty of write-ups on this conversion on the internet
- 3RZ-FE... the new 2.7L hilux engine. Tuff as nails
- 1JZ-GTE 2.5L twin turbo.... now we are getting silly
- 1UZ-FE 4.0L lexus V8..... a simply awesome engine
...... butt scratcher?!
Hi,
i've got a rn46 that i recently put an 18rg into and i probably wouldn't recommend it. They are a great engine but lack the torque down low, so not a massive improvement especially if you're running 33" mud tyres!! That and the fact that they are a really wide head once you put all the gear on they are very very very close to the steering uni and brake booster. Even after i swapped the mounts over (each side has a different length) to offset the engine it was still hitting the booster. The only way i could get out of it was to put a dome ramflow airfilter on it. Nice and clear now but bit of a paint. From memory it looked even more difficult to do in a yn5x. Just get a 4y and keep driving it. Pretty sure the tarago's had and efi version too!!

Ben..... carbies are usually to blame for the lack of low down torque in an 18RG.
If you've ever driven an EFI 18RG then you would completely change your tune..... they have BUCKET loads of torque, everwhere.

I completly agree with The Witzl on that one, converted my 18r-g from carby to EFI and it made the world of difference to power and economy. I did miss the sound of those carbies though.
Hello.
Hi,
interesting. I've got the efi plenum and associated gear at home which will be going on the rg eventually. First though, it's gonna come out of the hilux and go in the celica!!! Still gonna lose the low down torque when i put on the massif cams yo!!! But, i shouldn't need that much torque in a car that is 600kgs lighter and wheels half the size.
