    Default Conversion Question?

    Hey ppl.
New to the forums and was after some advice.
I have a celica SX 1990-91 model (Not really shore) 2.2ltr.
the motor has blown up in the age old story lent it to a mate and he FKed it.
    Now heres the question.
Where can i get a cheap motor for this car and what type of motors can be bolted in in as little to no fuss?

Hope this is the right place to post aswell.

Hope to learn a lot from this forum as it looks like a great place.

welcome to the forum. somone here is bound to answer your question. personally i have no celica knowledge. but i have done a conversion.

if the engine was not standard on the car in australia then you will need an engeneering certificate(they usually cost more then $800), but you can usually get the car through vicroads with no fuss, just if you have an accident you wont be covered. this is because the chassy may not be able to cope with the power, and emmisions might be too high, and you might need bigger brakes, etc.

also, dont forget about the little things that will cost extra, ie: if the engine your putting in had a bigger exhaust standard then the current one on the car, if your buying a gearbox at the same time you might need a new clutch, etc.

How about this, from what you have described I can gather you have an ST184 Celica, with a 5S-FE engine.

With that information, id do some searching around these forums, or the old ones, or wait for some nicer people to tell you more info

    you can fit a 3sgte

    ST16x (86 - 89) - 3S-GTE
    ST18x (89 - 93) - 3S-GTE
    ST20x (94 - 99) - 3S-GTE
    ZZT230 (99 - ) - 3S-GTE

taken from the toymods tech articles, which are supposed to be searched before creating threads like this

Um my motor never came out in my car and it cost me 100 bucks or so for the engineering certificate.

Rule usually is engine CC must not be more then 2.5 times the weight of the car in KG's for forced induction and 3 times for NA.

When getting an engineering certificate it is the engineers responcibility to check if the brakes are big enough, ect. thats why you pay for it.

pop open the bonnet and look for writing on the motor or the motor type on the little metal plate on the fire wall, that will say what motor is in it and will help people say what else will "drop in"

guys... notice "Cheap" in his requirements. this pretty much totally rules out the 3s-gte. I take it from your rquest that you're not after a torque steering monster, but just to get the car working again? if so, a 3s-ge or another 5s-fe are your best bets

the 2.2 litre is the 5SFE,

avaliable in st162 celicas, st184 celicas, svx10 camrys.

that said, a 3sge will also fit straight in, this is the 2.0 litre motor, and was avaliable in the st162 celicas, st184 celicas, sv10 camrys, and SW20 MR2's

the only work you'd have to do if you use a different models' motor, is fiddle around with the wiring, as the model's wiring differs slightly, the engine + gearbox will bolt in as per factory.

    Welcome to the forums champ

5S-FE in an ST162? I was pretty sure they were all 3S-GE, with the possibilty of the ST models being 3S-FE ?

QLD is well different (and easy to) to other states in regards to getting a car with an engine conversion rego'd

Yeah the guy has a ST184 with a 5S-FE. If he wants cheap I vote 5S-FE

A 'cheap' engine conversion is alomst an oxymoron (even going 3sge...)

    it can, and more.
if you just put another of the same engine in all you need to do is change engine numbers with the RTA

For the record, any S series engine will drop straight in. Even easier if the donor car was FWD (Celica, Camry, Caldina).

The easiest and cheapest option for you would be to just do a straight swap, I'm pretty sure 5SFE's are way cheaper than any of the other alternatives due to how common they are. Not very exciting in terms of performance though.
