I got someone else to measure this for me since I am away at work. It is from a genuine JZX81 front cut

Dip stick is 583mm from bottom to start of plug.
The tube is about 510mm in a relatively straight line (not following the
    bend).

    regards
    Brian

    Thanks Brian.
Hmmmm - that tube seems to be about 20mm shorter than anyone else has measured. I've just double checked mine and it is 530mm in a straight line (and 540mm if you follow the curve of the tube). Any chance of double checking it?

    Thanks

    Peter

I asked someone else to do it for me since overseas, but I will be able to get to it over the weekend.

I managed to have a look at the dipstick on another JZX81 (front sump) with the engine sittting on the ground prior to being installed.

The dipstick is 585mm long from tip to where it seats.

With the tube removed for ease of measurement it is 510mm long in a straight line, but if I try to follow it along all the curves it comes in at about 532-535mm. Approximately 10mm should be subtracted off this where it goes into the casting of the sump.

Thanks Brian - so JZX81 front sump results are confirmed.

I think the mystery is finally solved.
    I had a look at a known JZX90 front sump (1995) motor.
It had the same stick length and tube length as mine, so it looks like my front sump conversion was ok all the time

    So the summary is:

    JZA70 & JZZ30 (1J rear sump) & JZS147 (2J front sump): stick 555 - 557mm, tube 490 - 495mm,
Hence - stick protudes 67mm into sump from bottom of tube

    JZX81 (1J front sump): Stick 585mm, tube 530mm
Hence - stick protudes 55mm into sump from bottom of tube

JZX90 (1J front sump): Stick 612mm, tube 545-550mm (measuring along the curve of the tube, or 530 point to point),
Hence - stick protudes 67-62mm into sump from bottom of tube

    Thanks for all the help.

    Regards

    Peter

Hmm I have a 612mm stick in my Cressida 1JZ, but as far as I know the car used a JZX81 halfcut. Could explain why the oil goes so far up the dipstick when I put the oil in after an oil change. Anyone have a JZX81 stick for sale? Or should I just shorten mine? Is there places that sell dipsticks of certain lengths?

Good luck finding a JZX81 stick for sale!
Given that the dipstick is mostly just a piece of stainless steel cable, try taking it to a yachting shop to have them shorten it and swage (crimp) it back together again.
