Default Hmmmmm How hard would this swap be? Is it possible?

I'm looking at getting a 1985 MkII Supra, automatic... all stock, tons of receipts. The 5MGE was rated at 18mpg city, and 24mpg highway. I'd like to try and improve on that. There isn't much available for a 5MGE, 7MG engines are plentiful, but are they economical???

Since the 5MGE was WAAAY back in the stone age(joke - no hateful responses)... might a well tuned 3RZ engine produce similar power results while getting better economy?? Remember this is automatic... so hp isn't the main concern, but low end torque is the main concern.

Now if the numbers are close.... does anyone know if I can bolt the Supra trans to the RZ... OR is there a trans I can use with the RZ to install it in the Supra???????

Common swaps for supras are generally out of the JZ series, but I don't see too much reason why the 3RZ wouldn't work for your intended purpose.
I doubt the gearbox would bolt straight up, and I *think* it's A34D or something similar that has the bellhousing intergrated into the front section of the auto, which would mean you wouldn't be able to swap bellhousings. You'd need to check what auto it currently has as they could've fitted something different in the US. You'd also need to check what autos are fitted behind the 3RZ - if they have the same spline on the output shaft it's possible you could use your original tailshaft.
A 7M-GE is likely to be more economical due to the more modern management, and mechnically it will be relatively easy, but most people would not bother with such a swap.

If you want a modern economical engine to replace your boat anchor, a 2JZ-GE swap makes the most sense IMO. There's no reason a 3RZ wouldn't work but you'd be re-inventing the wheel a bit. JZ swaps have been done a thousand times so there's lot of knowledge and support available, which is a big consideration with engine swaps.

In my opinion the 3RZ would require too much custom work for something that will be no better than the 2JZGE, which basically bolts in.

Search the members ride section for an MA61/3RZ conversion. He's going a lot more track orientated that what you are talking, but its good for a look.

i think it would be a good idea.

if your MA61 is manual already, then find a 3RZ->W56 bellhousing and the engine will bolt up. next problem youll have is sump and engine mounts. i pushed my engine back as far as i could so it requires a custom sump. if you located it from the original gearbox position then you might get away with small sump modifications.

not sure what you have over there but we have 3RZ hiluxs with a mid type sump and toyota prado landcruiser with a front sump.

just noticed..... its automatic.. 3RZ autos were fitted with an A340e

it would also be a way to get cheaper rego in qld

I reckon the 2j (non-toibo) just so you can say "2jz, no sheet"

    plus it wil look excellent.

I think the 3rz will be more efficient though..

RZ is the large replacement for the 22RE 2RZ is 2.4 liter, while the 3RZ is 2.7 liter
