Exclamation Where to for "Steering Box"..... rebuild + modifications ?

Yep, the old one is not the best and would possibly like to change the steering ratio also. This is a power Steering Unit.

Have considered switching to rack & pinion, but this would involve too much hacking and get in the way of the dump pipe also....

    Thanks in advance !

depends what kind of gearing is in the box.. worm and sector, recirculating ball and nut... and depends what has worn.
usually it is things like bushes that wear, as opposed to teeth dramatically wearing..

as you should already know, changing ratio involves manufacturing new parts.. and i think i have never seen a business offering to make new steering box parts in custom arrangements, apart from simple worm and sector...

rack is better is almost ever way, and takes up less space than a moving pitman arm and drag link...

dump pipe is a ghey reason to not improve steering.....

with your experience, calculating the correct position for the rack should be no problem at all

I was hoping with this steering Box being common to Sigma's, that a range of parts and possibly ratios may be interchangable.

I can fab up removable mounts to attach to the cross-member and keep any hacking to the real backyarders, but things will still be too complicated. If anything I may run Honda's electric Power steering setup sometime in the future. That would be a nice way of doing things the right way.

Anyhow, will post the details of whoever I find back in this topic for future reference.

Thanks for the sensible reply OC.

if you want custom ratios for steering box (who the heck would make different ratios for sigmas???), you need to carve it out of a chunk of billet and get heat treated..
or, weld up original parts and gridn the gears..

i think you are underestimating the effort or cost of getting curved gear teeth cut into a steering box components....

mounting is easy. creating complex gear teeth (that work, are durable, and don7t have free play) is hard...

Mitsubishi (And Ralliart) played around with the steering ratio throughout the lifespan of the model (Sigma/galant), so its something I have to look into more.

I know how expensive it is to make custom gears, which is the reason why I woudn't do it either. Don't stress OC, I'm not that irrational.
