    Default ae86 diff upgrade

hello, i have tried searching this, but alot of the info is broken up and all over the place.

just need to know/clear a few things on the t-18 diff upgrade for an ae86

    1) does it matter if i get the early model (no swaybar mounts) or the late model dif (with swaybar mounts)? welding of mounts isn't hard, but is there any other differences??

    2) will i need a complete handbrake cable? (thinking yes, all 3 pieces)

    3) how hard is it/is it possible to convert the rear drums to disks? (pretty important)

    4) is there any other custom fab work that needs to be done that i should know about?

    5) finally, where is the best place to start looking for one in NSW?

    thanks all,
    helpful comments will be rewarded.

    1) No it doesnt, it will simply mean cutting off your current Swaybar mounts and welding them over.

    2) If you want disc breaks refer to 3.

    3) ST141 Corona Avante rear discs, backing plate(handbrakes) and calipers will all bolt up.
You will need all 3 pieces of Handbrake cables from the corona also. Handbrakes is wicked.
PM me for details though, tis a few little hitches, such as cutting and rewelding shock mounts.

    4)PM me

5)I dont know nor care as I am in fabulous Melbourne with an abundance of T18's so far.

    Cheers

    Jeremy

Oh and I might do a Tech article for this conversion.

    thanks mate.
what the stopping power with the ST141 disks like, and will they clear low offset (dished)wheels?
im guessing it's not a crazy hard conversion if done by a mechanical minded person right. and is it true that only the zenki LSD's will fit in this diff?

Stopping power is bloody awesome! Handbrake is the best factory one ive ever used, is as good as a hydraulic one, only legal!

    Conversion is easy.

For clearing wheels they are fine, will clear a stupid FWD offset wheel no probs.

Any T series LSD will fit in there, its just a matter of the axles. The T18 has the early type, less spline, axles meaning yes, a Zenki is the only way for T18.

Good luck, just let me know if you need any more help.

just a couple of extra questions...

    1. does this mod need an engineer's cert in vic for the car to be registered?

    2. same question for the jdm ae86 axel/lsd/disk into an adm sprinter?

    cheers

I would say that yes the brake upgrade would have to be engineered, as you are taking brakes from another vehicle, and a host of other things such as rewelding shock mounts.

But it looks standard and is much much better tham the Jap spec disc setup.

As far as the Jap stuff are you saying you want to bolt the jap LSD, Axles, diff centre and discs onto a TE72 (T18) diff or S series ADM sprinter diff??

    thanks for the reply

these questions arise as my dad is thinking of options for his stock adm sprinter. i bought my sprinter with the conversion already done, my understanding is that it has the entire jdm rear axle (disks, diff, etc) installed and mated to a t-18 tailshaft.

if you are having trouble finding a t18 diff (like me) according to other peoples posts on here and the old forum, ra40 diffs are t series as well and bolt in. maybe someone can shed some light on that. bit easier to find and ra40 than a t18!

yep he is just concidering what options are open to him. his is a bog-stock adm sprinter, so i assume it is the s series diff, which i think has no prospects (other than a locked diff which isn't an option). we assumed the jdm swap as in mine would be the easiest to put in and have the car road worthy, but they are pretty costly.

ra40 diff will bolt in but require an adjustable pan hard rod as the mounting position is different to that of S series/ T18 T series diffs

is it posible to do a cut and weld job on the mounts and use the stock pan hard rod?
    what about swaybar mounts?

would be better to make/buy a panhard rod, cause it would have to be spot-on, and chances are your car is lowered anyway so would be a good investment.

from memory ra40's dont have swaybars so you would have to put them on.

on that note. the RA60 diff is identical to a RA40 diff but WITH sway bar mounts

    hope that helps you out.

no-one really cares if you dismember a RA60 anyway
