twin plate clutch over a single plate 6 puck carbon version

Hey Guys,
well im pulling my diff out and was thinking about doing some other work whilst i was at it.
at the moment the clutch i have in the supra is very hard on both the driver and the car.
was wondering what people thought about which is better and why...

carbon has a lower friction co-efficient than a lot of things, so it would require higher clamping pressures, but also probably has smoother engagement than a sintered bronze (brass button) type clutch, and as it has 6 buttons offers more engagement 'slip' than a 4-puck or simular..

I drove one for a fair while, had no real issues, but i also didn't have to drive in bumper-bumper traffic.

A twin plate will be 'nicer' to drive, and offer the same sort of torque capabilities, but the cost is generally prohibative..

a full face friction plate will have softer engagment, but will not handle the same amount of torque..

oh, and some twin plates are noisy when disengaged.

twin plate is fantastic if you're rich.
button clutches are basically the poor man's (ie: most of us) twin plate

Brass button clutches really arn't that hard to live with, once you get used to it you won't be bothered. But as everyone says, if you can afford it, a twin plate is a much nicer thing.

brass buttons definately are a personal choice.. i loved mine, and would happilly have another, other people hate them... some people just can't park a car with one..

Does anyone do a dual compound clutch?
6 pucks with 3 being carbon, and 3 being brass?

a sprung centred and/or cushioned puck clutch will be nicer than not, but not as strong perhaps.

twin plate effectively doubles the clamping force of the pressure plate (ie the clamping force of the pressure plate is transmitted to the gearbox input spline twice), so you can have a much much lighter pedal than otherwise possible with a single plate... and you don't need such high friction centres either just good old organic sprung plates may be ok, since they now take half the load each...

twin if you can afford it and live with the rattle.

all depends on how much torque you're putting down as well... for most street applications a heavy organic sprung clutch will be fine, maybe with a kevlar face (I think that's the right face typ[e? too late to think)

for drivability, twin plate is the way to go.

i drove a mate's GTiR pulsar with a 3 puck button, and i loved it, but got back in my car and put dents in the floor under the clutch pedal (and wondered why it was so slow)

kevlar has a lower friction co-efficient than most organic centres i believe, but its much tougher and can stand more abuse.

Hehe, I did exactly the same thing in a 3 puck buttoned GTiR too! I really liked it once i got used to it.

Also remember that you can't keep on increasing the clamp load, sooner or later something will give, most likely the folk.

my lancer had an uber heavy jap clutch in it for a while.. broke the bracket and then ripped the firewall..
