Default power steering to no powersteering

    Hey folks

i want to get rid of my power steering, but need a non power steer rack from something.

    any suggestions for mx83.

just taking the pump off is not and option, its way to heavy.

probly a VL rack or similar may suit your needs.

how much travel has the std rack got? and how long are the steering around from B/J to Tie rod end?

need abit more info to be able to chase something to suit.

    cheers

can either go with rack with more turns lock to lock for same travel (higher gearing),
or with longer steering arms (need rack moved back by same distance as arm length increase, rack needs longer travel)
    or...as above

Besides the steering being too heavy without the pump, power steer racks run a thinner rod through them which is not designed to take continued stress which a pumpless setup would deliver.

Is this intended for a new drap car and will this be registered? If not then you can go small enough to consider safe enough to run a pass and turn around at the end of the track/move around a workshop and forces wont be too much of an issue.

I know if you are intent on making a new car you may be a bit guarded on specs and understand you may not be able to answer some questions. But think about what kind of tyres you are going to run up front (should make a big difference to force experienced), how much customisation you are going to do to the suspension which could incorporate a different steering rack to a suggested 'almost' bolt in style - what do the other drag cars run?

If going to be registered, then look at cars of a similar weight as a starting point (such as VL as already suggested) but remember there is always going to be a compromise with a factory part and more often than not it isnt going to be aimed towards the criteria you want.

Cant wait to see what you come up with and not just for this thread.

Have a look at RA6x Celica, they have a manual rack (well some do) and the front end is fairly similar to an MX83. I know because I have an MA61 rack connected to MX83 struts and steering arms.

RA6x rack could work, they are pretty similar widths.

Failing that i think one of the pov spec came without PS.

what about an electric driven pump? and keep the PS rack?

as im guessing you want to get rid of the mechanical pump to gain a few hp? or other reasons?

Weight, the PS rack weighs a ton in the Cressys.

weight, but mainly safety, the pressure the power steer pump is at if for some reason it splits a hose or something freak, then pretty certain it would result in a silver car and a wall, some thing im not keen on.
