    Default steering option - 1982 XT130 corona

    Guys,

after some advice with what to do with the steering in the corona.

current non power steering box is 4.5 turns lock to lock.

i need to get this down to 2 turns lock to lock.

do i get some new arms made and do a whole stack of maths to keep the existing steering box and just put new arms on the ball joints and new arms on the steering box and idler arm.

or get a powersteering rack of a commonwhore (or something) cut it down. get new lines made from the SR20 powersteering pump. and build a mounting system to hold it all then get a new steering coloum to connect it all up ???

advice required. money is hard to come by so the cheapest option would/ will be the better one !!

    thanks
    James

is there any particular reason you 'must' have it down to two turns?

Maybe an AE86 manual rack (weld mounts onto xt crossmember), quaife quick rack and pinion, and AE86 power steering arms (if bolt pattern is the same?)

    That'd get you close.

2 turns just means i'll really be able to throw it around without to to much wheel work.

i have the powersteering pump for the SR20. so i'll just get some new lines made up if i need power assitance.

there isn't a XT crossmember in the car anymore so i'll have to make mounts up.
any idea's where there may be an AE86 rack lying around ?? i'll measure up the distance between the steering arms tomorrow and i might spend the weekend at the wreckers looking for racks that fit.

did XT130's come with a powersteering option ?? how many turns were they ??

99% sure that XT130's never came with power steering.

What crossmember is in there now?

AE86's came with power steering in japan, however you can't get a quick rack and such for these obviously.

I can't really think of anything to speed your steering up with power steering apart from having some super short steering arms made up, but this will fuck with your geometry somewhat, there's a lot to take into consideration.

    no crossmember.

it's all custom built to hold the SR20.

thanks for the info about the AE86. i'll try a few importers this week.

was just thinking if there was something common.

    cheers

RT133 liftbacks had a power steering option (box, not rack). Maybe that would do the job?

EDIT: It looks like the power steering box from an RT133 bolts straight on to an XT130 chassis rail.

Try a box from something line an MX62 (or earlier?) Cressida maybe? Otherwise, try to find a rack with the correct width to match the inner pivot points as a starting point - you may find one in something completely unexpected.

Yep. samething with the TT132 ps. Original ps is something like 4 turns from lock to lock.
I have AE86/KE70 crossmember in my TT132. You can get fast steering racks for AE86 as said earlier. TT132 Corona chassis rails are the same bisnes as RT133/XT130 and Celica's and Carina's 20-40 series. So x-members are interchangeable and same mods are needed when AE86 x-members is used.
So check out how Celica dudes have solved their steering.
