Default Changing valve springs with head ON! 3S-GTE.

Okay I recently picked up a gen 2 head with HKS gear and want to swap it all to the head currently on my motor as I would rather not do the head gasket and other gaskets and shit.

So I want to know if anyone has done the vale springs on a 3S without removing the head?

I'm thinking I could do it a similar way to when I did it on an old hemi 6. Pump the cylinder up with compressed air to hold the valves up and make an adapter to bolt the spring compressor to the head in various positions. and go from there. I guess the main thing i'm worried about is how the cam bearing cap mounting holes and surfaces will take to the uneven pressure exerted by the spring compressor. Maybe I should make the mounting plate like a girldle that picks up on all the bolt holes and then make the compressor moveable along this plate?

i have no idea how one would do it mainly because of the deep seated valve springs. Might be best to remove the head nothing worse then losing a collet and wondering where the hell it went (ie down the timing case)

there are tools specifically designed so you can change valve stem seals etc without taking the head off.
    where in Vic are you?

there may be a specialty auto shop near you like Burson's that may have them for sale.

p.s. i assume that you don't want to swap the valves over from head to head, as this wouldn't be possible without removing head.

I did 24 valve stem seals on my 1jz after buying one of these http://toyotool.com/ - made the job extremely easy, my local cylinder head place has even borrowed it since!

There was a thread about 4age seals a while back, everyone was going to try the snap-on equivelant because it was cheaper. As 'aaagze' said, you wont be able to swap the actual valves though!

That looks too easy! How does it get the collets to go back in place?

You have the handle & the adaptor slides into it. You spin the adaptor around to refit, sit the collets on top of the retainer & the tool does the rest. Theres a little magnetic dick on the end.

Hard to explain, but you could borrow mine & give it a go.
Where abouts do you work? I'm in the northern suburbs (bundoora)

    PM me if you're interested.
    Cheers

I work all round the western suburbs, and sometimes further. Last week I was in Doreen!
I've ordered one, don't know how long it will take to get here though. How long did yours take? I'm hoping to get the head done within a couple of weeks.
