Twin Solex Carburettor Question

Hey guys,

I've read through the solex factory service manual (as i'm currently rebuilding a pair of 40mm PHH solex carbies) and I understand how the starter system works on it.
There is a wire that connects both carbs' starter thingies, and it is saying on a cold start, that this needs to be fully opened to allow starter usage.

So if I am to assume correctly, I will need to have a starter cable in the cabin, that I need to pull and open to full, every time I am to cold start?

Or am I completely wrong, and don't need to use the starter thingie at all.

I've done a search on solex carbies on the forum, and on google, and nothing can give me a definitive answer. On most twin carb setups, the wire isn't even hooked up (from what I can see in the pictures)

If someone could shed some light on this topic, I would be greatly appreciative.

Everything else I understand 100%, just a bit miffed by this whole starter ordeal.

Its called a choke.
And yes you need have it pulled for the first few mins of running the engine. Most ppl with these kind of carbs dont bother, just have the idle up screw turned a little high so you rev around 1,500rpm when cold.
The usual choke is automatic, runs off a heated coil or water heated etc...

Okay,

It did go across my mind that it acted like a choke. But it's never reffered to as that in the service manual.
It's function however, is very similar now that you mention it.

I don't think I will worry about hooking it up, unless I can think of a snazzy way of setting it up. Infact, after a quick daydream just then, I think I have a pretty simplistic way of hooking it up, so I can open / close the starter jets via a switch.

Seeing as I'm rebuilding these carbs, it'd be nice to have all the factory features working.
I could say "I want it to be as fuel efficient as possible at idle", but really, i'd be kidding myself using twin carbs and fuel efficient in the same sentence.

You could adapt an auto choke from some over carby, the electric coil ones are easy enough (common on toyota's 1975-1985), just need a constant 12V source. Personally id just have it idleing high for the first few mins, but i dont take particularly good care of old engine as im never going to keep them for long. Fun to work on though.

Hmm, I might try that, thanks for the idea. I just thought of an easy linkage system that could be hidden in the cabbin.

I want this motor to last long (it's not an old motor by any stretch of the word)

At any rate, i'm still in the process of rebuilding the carbs, so I've got plenty of time to work out what I need to do in regards to the starter setup.
