if it's the 2.4L I'd look at upgrading the cooling system before you try and throw more boost at it.
im looking at getting a turbo diesil hilux and im wondering wot kinda boost would u be able to run on them safely??
i know that diesils run on compression so im just not sure wot kinda boost u could run
yea it wont make it a speed machine but i would beef it up a lil bit winding up the boost and adding a front mount etc
any other ideas to mod them abit??

so front mount etc would be the go first??

Running more boost will do little to nothing unless the fuel rack has been adjusted to give more fuel. 6psi is safe 12psi will work but engine life will get shortened. Oh yeah its spelt Diesel.![]()

so in order to mod it effectively id need to change the injectors or the pump to get more fuel going in nd then wind up the boost a bit n make sure the cooling is all good?

Most turbo diesel pumps have a main fuel screw which can be used to adjust the base fuelling level. Turning it up will increase fuel, and probably make black smoke.
If you're going to do boost mods and intercooling then this can get you part-way towards more power. It's pretty crude, but it's a start. You might get some black smoke before the boost comes on.
The catch is that if your pump is originally from a non-turbo diesel, it won't have an aneroid (boost reference line.) This means the main fuel screw has probably already been turned up when the turbo was added, and it might not have any more potential for extra fuel.
A different engine - 1KZ-TE (3 litre surf) or the D4D, might make a better base. Or if your Hilux has the 2L motor, you might be able to put on a 2LT mechanical turbo pump or a 2L-TE electronic pump if you like wiring. 1983 might be too early for 2L, though.

Its an 83 model, and has undoubtably done a lot of work allready. Do you really think that upping the boost on a 25 year old engine that has already had a turbo put onto a non turbo engine is such a good idea?
You are buying an 83 model, so I am guessing that money is tight. can you afford a new engine when this one goes bang? and can you afford to have the car off the road?
It will probably have a 2L ...from memory there are two types ... steel and alloy rocker covers...
Putting an intercooler on it is a good idea.. I would be very conservative with any boost increases.. good luck with it.![]()
while we are on the subject. my dad has a turbo diesel surf, its a 91 i think 2t-E 2.4 injected. What sort of boost can you put into these, i think its 7 or 10 pound stock. Also since its electronic injected will the ecu compensate or does the fuel still need to be increased manually by the screw on the mfp?
also anyone removed egrs on these, seems to be a common mod on surf forums.

im going to eventually upgrade to better pistons, turbo, fuel pump etc but its just for the moment while im saving money
yea its a stock non-turbo diesel with an aftermarket turbo added its a pretty tiny turbo though.
the car itself is in great condition just bought it for $5000 so pretty happy just wana try nd get a bit more out of it

Diesel, unlike petrol can run lean quite happily.
Upping the boost without increasing the fuel will allow for a minor power improvement simply because there's more air in the chamber to get hot and make the piston run away from the flames.
It wont be the same as having the correct ratio, but on diesels it doesnt really matter all that much.
You're more likely to notice some change in economy - I'd presume for the better.
RE the intercooler...
Sitting round the campfire has revealed that the intercooled 3L Pootrols tend to shit themselves a lot faster than the non intercooled ones. I originally argued it would be alterations to the internals, but the lads were adamant- the intercooler was the drama. Basically, with the same boost on cooler air, your shoving denser air into a really highly strung combustion chamber. You can get away with this in petrol applications because of the low (relatively!) compression ratios but you really have to be careful around the 20, 22:1 ratios you get in a diesel. I might well be wrong- but I'd recommend looking into it.
