    Default 4AGE 16V Running Poorly

I have a JDM 4AGE 16V W/TVIS which is done approx. 200 000km +. The car will have a bad smell to it when driving and I can clean my muffler and within 50km the exhuast will be covered in black crap again.
In the last 5000km I have changed - fuel filter, extractors + exhaust, oxygen sensor, rotor, dist cap, leads, spark plugs, air filter and have had the timing checked. The car will also back fire when I change gears or let off the gas.
I am currently using HPR 15 (15w/60 Semi Synthetic). I have been told to change to thicker mineral based oil. But that won't fix everything. Any recommendations?

    Cheers

Does it go through much oil? Oil rings are stuffed? Maybe compression rings too if it really runs like shit.

Just a suggestion - do a compression test.

Also, are your plugs gapped right / and right temp range for the car? You can get a lot of carbon if plugs run too cold...

If I was to put in a Valve Regrind Set and run thicker oil, would I notice a difference?

Try water temp sender or map sensor and hose.
Oh and check your brake fluid (maybe master leaking if it smells bad)

HPR15 is ok but HPR30 would suit the engine tolerances better.

Are you using a lot of fuel?, based on what you say about the muffler you may be overfuleing, either that or you may have a cracked piston letting oil into the combustion chamber in which case youd also expect a lot of smoke out the pipe which you havent mentioned.

As above do a full compression check, if that doesent turn up anything start looking for faulty sensors and/or replace and inspect all your vacme lines. If none of those fix the problem than you need to pull out the injectors and get them flow tested and serviced.

if you do all that and you still have the same problem then post again and well try a few other less likely causes

I couldn't tell u exactually how much fuel I use as my fuel gauge doesn't work properly but it does use fuel. It does blow smoke at start up but not alot. What other sensors can I check?

the two temp sensors at the back of the head would be the starting place, then run a test over the map sensor if they show up fine.

^^^^ wouldnt that be considered advertising?

as said by IRA11Y do a compression test, maybe run a thicker oil, i know in my 4ac rolla i was using a thinner oil would blow smoke on start up(old motor is part of the prblem but anyway) putting a thicker oil and it hasnt done it since

Is it really running BAD or is it just running bad tune, ie rich, as said - power would still be okay, but car is smokier (if thats not a word it should be), smells "bad", and chews more fuel?

Can i suggest you get your pod filter at least a few inches away from your coolant return line, or else get some insulation between them (go to Clark rubber)...

Air intake next to boiling fluid = suckful.
