Assuming it is still running the standard camshafts.....
Setting them back to stock will give you a more accurate reading to compare to the Factory numbers. Not necessarily higher or lower.
hey guys
i have a 4age 16v motor here, and it has adjustable cam gears on it (bought it like that)
now, the intake side is retarded abit, and the exhaust side is advanced alittle bit.
the compression reads as follows: 135, 130,135,135
now, given my cam gears, would this be affecting my compression reading?
assuming it was timed correctly and everything was set back to stock, would i expect my result to go up higher, or lower?
for what its worth, the engine doesnt blow smoke, and still goes pretty hard, and still loves her revs/limiter...
thanks guys

yeh stock camshafts
engine is at another location so it isnt simple, but im just after ideas on what i should expect..
anyone else care to comment on weather my readings would go up or down, assuming i set the timing correctly?
after i set the timing right up on my aw11 the compression slightly raised but im not totally sure if that is a normal occurance or not but hope that can shed some light on the matter.
130. 135 is too low, no matter if you get a bit back from readustment or not. I'd look for a spare and build it
Information is POWER... learn the facts!!
I dont think we can really say that when we dont know what he means by "retarded a bit" and "advanced a bit". A "bit" is a vague statement. How much exactly? What brand cam gears?130. 135 is too low, no matter if you get a bit back from readustment or not. I'd look for a spare and build it

i'd agree.. assuming u're playing with 5 degrees each way, you're sitting on 130 to 135 psi of compression, the "book" says that ideal compression is between 180 to 140 psi.. and below 140 psi, is a bit on the low and "ready for rebuild" side... still..is that on a dry or wet test?
Research has shown child in front seat causes accidents, accident in back seat causes child
If your 100% certain you know the intake is retarded and exhaust advanced, then your compression numbers should be much higher then factory as Overlap is reduced, so it pretty much means the block is a dud and the cam gears were installed to save having to rebuild it.Originally Posted by connection

No, but wet-dry, cold-hot, run recently-sitting for ages, throttle open-closed, all plugs removed-one at a time, battery fresh-drained conditions may&can affect it more.Originally Posted by connection

numbers your getting are what would be expected with throttle closed.if thats the case use something to hold the throttle open while testing this should give you some higher readings. good news is pressure seems to be fairly consistent across all four.
