buy a compression tester from supercheap combo push on / screw in type
for about $30.
disconnect the spark system ie take out dizzy rotor or disconnect coil lead
and tape up to insulate. then take out all spark plugs. then push on tester
and let someone crank over motor for a few sec. take reading and
release gauge to do next one (push button on gauge)
do this on all 4 cylinders:
1.do a dry compression test (normal test as above)
2. then a wet compression test
(by putting a little bit of engine oil down the bores through the spark plug hole.)
if its low on dry test then it could be rings or valves
if its low on wet test then it valves
if its high on wet then its rings
if all or any single cylinders are under about 120psi its not good,
check your motor manual for specific specs on compression though.
if theres a variation of more than 20psi between cylinders its not good,
again check your motor manual for specific specs.
