Default 1MZ rear main oil seal replacement.

    Hey Hey,

My parents Camry has a leaky rear main oil seal, Its a 1MZFE 3.0 V6 auto model. I went to Toyota and they want $1600 just to do a seal so im going to do it, And im a 1st year apprentice

I have had a poke around the engine bay and i can see that the gearbox isn't going to come off in the car very easy so i was just going to pull the motor out and do it on the crane. Toyota said they remove the engine too which is why it cost's so much to replace.

My question is are there any special tools or techniques that will make my life easier ?

Paying some one else to do it isn't an option either. I'm doing it in the carport with a engine crane so im going to give myself the weekend to do it at least.

You replaced a FWD clutch before? If yes, then you should already have a pretty good idea of what to do. Main thing is, don't forget to disconnect everything before attempting to move the engine too far - especially the converter! Make sure the converter is properly in place before you attempt to attach the engine to it again, carefully go around and make sure you reconnect everything again, and you should be right. Care and logical thinking are what's required, and it should be good learning for you - you'll feel quite proud of yourself when you're finished.

I'm a second year at a Toyota dealership. The way we remove boxes on those Camry's is to drop the whole subframe out the bottom and hold the engine with a gantry/chain. You can then drop the box out. Saves losing coolant, fuel lines, etc., but only if you have a hoist really.

Engine out would be better if doing it on the ground I reckon.

as gav has said ; put the car up on stands as high as it will go
drop the entire assy down under the car (hold it with the crane) then pull the box
    then do the seal
make sure you get the seal in nice and straight.

Converter ? do you mean catalytic converter ? torque converter ?

Ive pulled a 4AGZE out of a Ae92 trueno, 4AGE Ae82 and a few clutches in ae82/92's. I feel i can do it. Haven't done fwd auto yet.

The only real thing that scares me is the vacuum lines.

    Why ?

I'm guessing its hard to get the shaft back in and it be in the right position ?

It'll also make a huge mess of ATF if it comes out

Do it in the car, don't be a girl!

Then you won't have vacuum lines to worry about either - mind you there shouldn't be a lot that need to be disconnected to drop the engine anyway

Hmmmmmmmmm... I JUST quoted a client a rear main seal repair.... there is NO way it should run $1600!!! The Job pays 8.5 hours.... the seal is $30. How much does your dealership get for labor??

.... anyway, the ladies quote to do the rear main seal was $979 and change. That was/is a 97 Camry.

They want to charge for 15 hours roughly. I think they said $105 per hour.

    Its a 1997 1mzfe V6 Camry auto piece o shit

Ask them to show you the hours Toyota Motor Division decided is required to do that specific repair.

as I said we are talking about the SAME car... 97 Camry V6 rear main seal in a Camry with an automatic transmission. The FACTORY labor required is 8.5 hours. Call you local Toyota Motor Division and complain that your dealer wants to charge you OVER Toyota specified repair times...........

Even @ 105 per hour.... $892.50 and the factory seal should only be about $30-$40. I'd call them on it.....

PS... even adding asundries... (coolant, gaskets, ATF, motor oil, P/S fluid, etc....) the price should still be under $1000...

They would have just over quoted the job to avoid doing it. The dealer could book in 8 - 9 services during this time & make more profit.
