what motor are you trying to fit?
if its toyota, theres a fair chance someone here will be able to give you a straight up answer, and probably some tips.
if its drag, maybe look at the tiny-as-fuck rotarys?!
Howdy all!
Just went down to the local wrecker and not one of these in sight, so im turning to anyone with one to help me out.
I just need a few measurements to see if my chosen engine will fit with ease or if some major surgery will have to go down.
I need measurements for :
Radiator support panel to firewall (basically length of engine bay)
Distance between strut tower to strut tower (width of engine bay)
height from crossmember to approx where bonnet is (height of engine bay)
thanks to anyone who can help!
once i know what im up against, i will be looking for a project car (drag car, no reg required, just needs to be rather rust free, straight and be able to be pushed!)

Hey mate, if your not in a rush and no one comes in to help before me, I can get you the measurements tomorrow. Do you want any other measurements, cause I may as well measure everything you need in one go.
Cheers, Matt
only toyota's finest, 2jz of course(backed with a TH400 trans). Ill be doing everything myself from the solid engine mounts, to the fuel system, diff and 6 point cage. The long sleek nose of the early celica's look like they are a custom to taking an inline 6 fairly easily?
any idea on what they weigh stock (wet or dry)?
had more than enough 13b's to last me a life time in many cars and ive seen 4sfed's engine bay up close, so i know they fit no probs. i still have a 13B on my garage floor (anyone want to buy??)

2J wont fit, with the engine as rearward as you can get it, the harmonic balancer sits on the lower rad support.
unless your prepared to cut the tranny tunnel out, look at a TA23/RA23, same shape (you can tell the 23's from a TA22 by the bulge in the bonnet)
nah no rush at all! Ive got the 2j in my aristo to measure against, just want to make sure the celica is a good starting point [was originally looking at a mazda rx4/929, then a ke20 corolla but the corolla is too short (scary!) in the wheel base, and the rx4 needs to much firewall to go bye bye)Originally Posted by PULSE

ill be cutting it out anyway, as the TH400 is a bit bigger than anything else toyota intended to go in there! lolOriginally Posted by EldarO
but if the ta23/ra23 is the same car and is 'longer' in the bay, then i might as well start with one of them.
(i only put ta22 in the subject line because i thought they were all refered to as that model code... im a bit of an early celica n00b!)

the TA22/23 and RA23 are the coupe's, the Ra28 is the "mini mustang"(cringe) type hatch.
you'd best off start with a 23, or a 28 if you want the hatch style, the 22 is the smallest of the lot.
AFAIK there were "long nose" TA22's, but they're ex-japan, somewhat (or very?) rare, and most of the classic celica owners on this site will probably castrate you if you butchered one in ha;f decent nick
theres a few celicas in the members rides on here with 1J's and 1G's in them, theyre sort of similar dimensions, so start there i guess.
id hazard a guess at saying that the standard 2J turbos would foul on nearly everything, so i hope, for your sake, that they're going
and they weigh in at around the 1000kg mark standard, maybe a little more/less.
thats ok about the turbos, because they will be replaced by a single gt42Originally Posted by EldarO
nah dont want no hatch uglyness, not to mention its a PITA with andra and the fuel system setup. has to be totaly inclosed in a hatch, just means more headaches!
ive just looked at a few pics of TA22, TA23 and RA23.. cant tell the difference between any of them at all LOL

theyre very similar, at least in pics.
the bonnet bulge is the most obvious though.
they are a bigger/wider car though, sit the two side by side and you can clearly see it.
no probs! i guess that narrows the search for what specific model i have to look for then, ta23/ra23 it is!
if a 1GGTE can fit in there pretty comfortably, i dont think the 2j with my angle grinder would have all that much trouble
thanks

if you have to mod the trans tunnel anyway then you may as well stick with a 22 as it is lighter.
Chris
if the engine bay is longer on the 23's then id rather go with them. I have to fit a pretty decent sized radaitor and preferably a 100mm thick intercooler up front too.
is there anywhere on the net that has manufacture specs of them all (ie weight, wheelbase, overall length etc)?

scour the classic celica clubs and sites, you'll find a fuckload of info, both stuff you need to know, and enough to piss away hours reading about what people are doing to theirs.
