How are the ball joints on the RN40? Do they both point down or does the bottom one point up?
Look at RN41 - they have front discs and IIRC, they may even be vented. Pretty sure bottom ball joints point up.
As stated above. Brake upgrades are really in need of. Drums are just not cutting it.
Already know of the balljoint arrangement being different, but does anyone know if the lower control arms are interchangable between any models of similar age!?!
Once again, pics or any info of setups welcome,
Cheers

See... Ive got the RN41. But i have read that this was a option still on the 41's, the front disc conversion right.
And yes thats correct. The ball joint is fitted upwards on the newer model. Compared to it fitted downwards. Also the stud size on the lower balljoint to the lower control arm is different, though the configuration is the same. Also, may i mention that the castor rods are located in different sections and use different style bolts comparing the 2 arrangements. When i found this all out, *had both stub axles caplipers lines, everything but the lower arms* the problem really just came up with the ball joint layout and never got the chance to measure the length and width of the lower arm.
If the lower arms are interchangable, i'll source up the arms that came off the car that i got the axle assembly from *Ln55 1982* and do the disc conversion that way.
I have an RN41 - with disks .. & it still doesnt stop!
Will be upgrading to the hilux / landcruiser 4 pots in the coming weeks.
You also need ms123 disks due to the different offset of the calipers, and by the looks of it; a 2mm spacer ring between the disk & hub.
If you have no luck with the LN55 gear, you'll probably have to just source some RN41 disk brake stub axles & go from there.
Hope that helps a little.

suprisingly i dont know my hilux models all that well.
but with the 50 series onwards you should be able to run a combo of r33 calipers and ba falcon discs, these i can assure you will pull it up in a hurry as i have them on mine.
could the lower control arms be modified to suit the LN55 balljoint arrangement?
if you can supply pics i may be able to figure it out for you.
cheers

Okay. We have someone with a 41' with discs, who suggest they dont work so swell. Atleast it brings me up to fair game for upgrading yeah?.. Although, If you so could kindly measure up some distances, like width, overall length, that would be so much help as in to if LN55 lower control arm will fit, and how much correction will be needed.
As for modding the standard lower control arm, its kinda hard. Pics though are easly supplied, providing i find out how to host them, or someone else hosting? Anyways, what i could see at the time, the bracing that goes along the backing plate, isnt recessed enough to the the ol' 'flip over the ball joint trick' to counter act the balljoint. If someone could get me a Ln55 lower control arm and measure it up, then compare the other measurements to the 41's. from there we could figure what needs to get grinded out and what needs to be welded
Mate, otherwise, if disc front end was optioned enough, or someone had some old calipers to rebuild, and stub axles to sell i wouldnt have to much of a problem... Does anyone???
Thanks to all replies so far. Help is valued!!! Muchly

Newer arms will fit up to at least 96, I personally upgraded to the whole setup out of an '84 model, got top and bottom arms, spindles calipers and disks for $150.

im fully sick...
got proof, evidence that this was the case.
Prove it if possible please![]()
Model, transferable models, maybe even a model that yourself used. Some proof and convincing is what i'm asking for. This is a daily driver, at the latest, its off the road for 4 days...
