guys just to clarify i used an ra60 power steer coloumn as it has height adj. love it. did all the things linden mentioned and it bolted straight up to my ae71 power rack. i used lite ace tie rod ends as they are longer with more thread.

i didnt butcher my dash guys sorry mpw i must have confused ya but cut a fair bit out of the coloumn shroud. ill throw up a pic. its work in progress as im trying to find some sort of soft plastic that will bend when the coloumn tilts to move around the shroud and not bind up. i highly recomend the adj coloumn for people with different seat like me.

One thing I don't like about Mike's method is that the first uni/knuckle is quite a fair bit recessed... It may make for a bad angle... But, then again, it may not...

Mike, do you have any pics of it joined to the rack?

    This is what I used:

    RA2# Steering Column Surround
    RA2# Upper Steering Column
    KE70 Lower Steering Column

Bearing Case Welded to RA2# Steering Column Surround

this is the plastic i had to cut out. i was able to keep all the original mounting holes.

might have a bit of a problem. i think my celica has turned into a torana with the angle of the steering wheel. anyone else have this prob. i didnt do it but im sure im going to have to fix it.

did he cut 12mm out of the P/S wing on the column and weld it back together or just bodgy it by slotting the holes?

not atm. but ill get some first chance i get. the angle doesnt seem bad. still turns freely with ease. doesnt hit, clip or grind on anything.
i thought about extending the Column so that it protruded further into the engine bay but im sketchy on welded steering components. especialy knowing how rough i am.

    Hey Guys,

Mikie - yours looks very different to mine... paticuarly in the engine bay.

    I have a ra28.

KE70 crossmember and rack (manual rack - no PS)
RA65 steering column (manual column) with adjustable tilt.

Had to cut and weld mounting point like Lindon described, but mine sits straight (well from what i can tell... ill look this arvo.)

For the bottom - i just mounted the RA65 lower shroud to my fire wall - used a couple existing holes and drilled another - seems to work fine for me.

I think there are pics in my members ride thread, im at work, so have nothing at the moment.

    Cheers'

    sorry to dig this up.

What are peoples opinions on POWER STEER vs MANUAL STEER in a celica fitted with a heavier motor then stock ei, 1jz.

The next step in my build is to sort out the steering, just curious as to what peoples thoughts are! thanks.

With my 1jz and manual rack it isnt to bad... But im running 205s.... No doubt if you were running much bigger it'd start to be a problem...

Sorry for digging in an old thread but i have a question for those who have completed this conversion.
How are you guys finding the amount of lock that you have, mines seems to have diminished form the factory pitman arm setup, and its got me confused/worried. in a suburban t intersection i need to do a 3 point turn to turn around.
What lca are you using with which struts?

i haven't read the whole thread but we've just discovered you need to use the P/S radius arms (which are shorter) to get a decent lock with the P/S conversion.
im using AE86 arms but they have a bit of an offset to them which decreases your track by 10mm per side. if the end of your LCA is close to the disk then this might not work for you.
in my RA28 build thread (link in my sig) ive taken some pics of the two and the differences.
if you need any more info just ask.

    sheepers.
But if you use the factory AE86/AE71/KE70 would you get more clearance between the disc and the LCA? I realise the length from inner pivot to the ball joint is the same but is the profile of the end of the LCA different? Might reduce the problem.
