I read the article, and I found it quite informative. I currently have a problem with my 5S-FE that it won't start, and when it was running last it was spewing exhaust smoke back through the throttle body and air box. What do people think have happened ? Streched timing belt, or the timing belt has jumped several teeth ? Busted valve or valves need reseating ?

Anyone have any ideas ? What would be some good diagnostic methods for trying to determine what has happened ? Am I better off trying to fix this engine, or just buying a 2nd hand one ?

so you have exhaust coming through the throttle body and airbox?

maybe it's turned into one of those S engines that have the inlet and exhaust on the same side heheh

but yea maybe a blocked exhaust? but even so exhaust shouldn't go out from where the air comes in.. i'm surprised the car actually ran that way.. (maybe thats' why it's not running anymore )

I was driving for about 20 odd minutes, the car was running rough around 2k rpm. I was driving along and it started to stall on me. Tried to keep the rpm high to get to a side street, I noticed some smoke coming from under the bonnet. Pulled over onto the shoulder, popped the hood. Popped the top off the airbox, smoke came out. Got the gf to try to start it again, a heap of exhaust smoke came out of the intake.

Any ideas ?

Really, I didn't even think of that Hibba. So the diagnostic route so far is run a timing light, and compression/leak down test. What else does everyone else think I should take a shot at ?
