Meh, just wash it. If it falls apart, you were going to buy a new one anyway.
Just use a bit of detergent and a soft brush, blast it from the inside to push the dirt back out.
Oiling is optional, I don't think most cheap ones are oiled anyway.
Hello,
A fair bit of dirt has built up on my pod filter, thing is I dont know if its washable or not, There's no brandname on it just a generic blue one.
Should I wash it or buy a new one? Must I apply some sort of anti dust oil to it after the wash?
Thanks.

is the filter made from paper or material or foam?

if its a dry unit it'll fall apart so toss it. If its foam just pull the cage off soak it dry it and get some oil from autobarn or super cheap. If its paper/foam like a k&n then brush it with a paint brush and tap it on the ground to dislodge all the heavy stuff, rinse ir from the inside with a drible of water, to much and it'll blow apart, leave it in the sun to dry and then re-oil it.
You can by from autobarn etc, the proper cleaning solution & oiling solution for the K&N filters, washing in water only wont do much, you need something to break down the oily residue to clean them out properly, they recomend not to use petrol though .. And they must be re oiled otherwise they wont filter anything except for rocks ..
Piss it off and buy a new one with instructions and you will be able to look after it correctly in the future.
why? cleaning instuctions are on the K&N oil pressure pack any way.Originally Posted by off-road

OK fair enough, I just interpreted your answer with the only advantage being that he gets instructions.
yep, the good old K&N recharge kit has a cleaning solution, instructions, and, when your done, a rather messy way of re-oiling it
I think mine had some sort of oil on it, first I thought it was a leak from the power steering fluid onto the filter, but after reading that many pod style filters have this dust retention oil, mine must have it too.
Would repco or supercheap carry this stuff? Should I spray it on the outside or inside of the pod after washing and drying?
Oh by the way, Oldcorolla's, It's not a foam type, it has mesh then some sort of thin paper.
Thanks.
paper is disposable.. like stock filters.
foam and material filters have oil on them (as otherwise they are terrible at filtering), but paper usualyl doesn't..
foam or material is washable.. paper is not...
chuck it. and get a large stock type panel filter

Maybe I just dont know the difference between paper and foam, since i swear mine had some sort of oil in it.
Do foam ones look like this :

And paper ones like this :

left = foam, middle = K&N (materials), right = ghey
you should be able to tell if it looks like paper or material or foam fairly easily i woulda thought?

Mine looks almost identical to the K&N one in the middle.
