Oooh, race tracks in the mountains. I'm in.
Cruise to the mountains to find the lost race tracks
Well guys, after doing some driving around we are going to head to 2 disused race tracks
Out first meet up will be at the first track. Parramatta park, from there we will head up the mountains to Katoomba and check out and walk around Catilina Park.
Map of Parra Park
Catilina Park
I was going to cruise past Schofields and Amaroo but there is nothing left to look at any more.
So the plan is meet up at Parramatta park just near the Old Government House. At 10:00 for a 10:30 leave, we'll do a lap of the park and get some photos. Then we'll head out and up the mountains via the Great Western Hwy.
Depending on what time we arrive we'll stop for some lunch at a nice kid/family friendly pub in Katoomba then head down to the race course. We are able to walk around the circuit which took me around 30-40mins. However I am going to try and see if we can get some access to get onto the straight for some photos (I doubt we'll be able to do a lap as some of the road has washed away at the top of the course)
Then from the circuit we'll head home via Mitchells pass or via Old Bathurst Road for some twisties. Or if time is on our side maybe for a photo of the 3 sisters as the track is 2min away from them.
When I sused this cruise out and walked around the circuit I spoke to local. He was saying racing stopped in the 50's cause a few people where killed. It is however amazing at how much of the track is left. Its like racing had stopped only years ago. The fence is still up and you can still read some sponsors signs. I found it quite sad and interesting.
So in short:
Time: 10:00
Where: Old Government House, Parramatta Park, Parramatta
Destination: Katoomba, Catalina Park and the 3 Sisters
What to Bring: Full tank of fuel, CB, Cash for lunch walking shoes and a sense of nostalgia
This should be a great cruise
