FWD locker???
edit : okay it's a RWD car but still...... think of the possibilities![]()
ive been told the way to see if an sw20 mr2 gearbox is lsd or is by looking through and if there is a bar its lsd and if its a hollow centre its open diff.
So WTF is this then???? aftermarket maybe??
Im confused
Also something to note, but still not sure wot it means, if i rotate one driveshaft then the other rotates in the same direction, as in both forwards or both backwards.

Research has shown child in front seat causes accidents, accident in back seat causes child
that pic wont tell you much. you need to split the case and have a better look.
if it rotates both wheels the same way it should be LSD but not all act this way mainly clutch type.
pu the car in gear and try to turn a wheel, if it spins the other wheel the other direction then its probly open.

alot of fwd gear boxes have a bar going across when you look through and that doesnt make them lsd, yours obviously doesnt have one but i dont know if thats a sure fire way to tell on an sw20 box.
just split the box. will take all of 20 mins to have it back together again resealed. otherwise just put it in the car and do a skid.
hmm wot if i do split the box, will it then become obvious in some way? i've never had one open before and wouldnt really know how to tell anyway.
I guess i will prolly split it cos i dont wanna put it in at all if its not LSD and while its apart i can source a lsd setup
But yeah is the same way i can tell once she is open??

all 94 onwards sw20 turbo boxes are LSD
I DONT WORK FOR TOYOTA ANYMORE
please, no more PMs!
that bar is in almost, if not all toyota boxes, its the bar the spider gears run on.
usually with toyota stock LSDs there will be a small hole, as in the one above, if its LSD.
and a larger hole in open diffs. hence the LSD cars usually have an axle thats a few mm shorter.

take a pic and we'll tell you.Originally Posted by Wildsupra
hmm the motor appears to be a 92 or newer as the plug leads say 92 on them.....assuming they are the original leads.
Well i hope that small hole means lsd
Silly question how do i pull the box apart? is there some special sequence i need to follow or can i simply hit the obvious bolts with the rattle gun ahaha, never had a Transaxle box apart before, is shit gunna fall out everywhere??

lay it bellhousing down. there are obvious bolts that go all the way around that you need to take out as well as some less obvious ones. once the obvious ones are out you probably need to undo a bolt that holds reverse in, maybe one or two for the shafts but not too bad.
Have a couple of pry bars handy too. The toyota red gearbox sealent sticks really good.
Both the boxes I pulled apart required a fair bit of levering to get open.
Have a look around for a toyota service manual, just to help you avoid any unwanted occurences![]()
You guys are crazy if you think getting to the differential is a easy and quick job.
You'll need gear pullers, probably an angle grinder to remove the spiked nut on the output shaft, a new nut for the output shaft and alot of patience and skill to remove all the torx bolts that hold the bearing retainer plate in without either stripping/sheering them, or destroying your torx bit.
You cant remove the main part of the casing without first removing 5th gear from the upper section.
From that picture it looks like an open differential to me. I've got one downstairs. The factory LSD differentials have the bar in the E153. Some of the aftermarket diffs have a hole as well though.
Don't bother splitting the casing open if you don't have a gear puller, harmonic balancer puller (which you'll probably destroy whilst removing 5th gear synchroniser) and other odd bits. I had a modify a random 2 jaw gear puller to get something I could use to remove 5th driven gear.
Following pictures are from reassembly, but you'll get the idea.
Diff down here:
Large casing fitted, picture minus all 5th gear parts & bearing retainer plate.

AHHAHA i knew it wouldnt be as easy as what was being said
Surely there HAS to be some way of telling if its lsd or not BEFORE i install it.
Are LSD and NON LSD axles different sizes or lenghts or something? the problem is i need to make custom driveshafts to fit the gearbox into my aw11 and i dont wanna make em then find out its not lsd and have to make new axles/driveshafts to be able to fit an lsd box. Any idea on that?
