Default over heating 1JZ-GTE in MA61

Hey guys what has everyone done to avoid over heating in there 1jz-gte ma61's?

mine is ok for normal driving but once you start to thrash it eg track day it stays quite hot.. does'nt come down unless i drive normally for a while.

It has the stock ma61 radiator brand new!, twin thermo's, new thermostat and new coolant. and its only running a cooler at the front no air con so its got good flow.

    and tips or tricks?

The biggest problem with the MA61 is the small frontal area, so it's hard to get adequate airflow through the radiator. I've tried nearly everything with mine and it still gets hot after a thrashing, so my next idea is to install bonnet vents to extract hot air from behind the radiator.

If you don't want to go to that extreme I found the engine oil cooler helped things a bit. Mine is a small one but if you used a bigger one I think it could make a significant difference. Disconnect the water-to-oil cooler behind the oil filter and it will take some of the load off the cooling system.

that was my next step to install a drop vent cos it gets farken hot under there. i will also do that oil cooler mod. Also thinking maybe some better fans like el twin fans that actually have a shroud so its sucking through the whole area of the radiator instead of just the two 10 inches.

just on that water cooled plate is that just a sandwhich plate? so if i took it off i could screw the oil filter in where that plate went?

    that helped mine

PWR 57mm Radiator for a MK3 with 2 12 inch SPAL thermo fans. Thermos are pointless unless sitting in traffic stopped for 3+minutes
    If in doubt power out

Fans don't do much at speed...

A 3 core rad may help...

Also do you have the underbody tray fitted? It should help with airflow direction...

As mentioned fans do SFA when the car is moving. Even a huge fan won't match the airflow of a car moving at 40km/h.

No it's not that simple I'm afraid. I looked at doing this when I bypassed my water cooler but it's more trouble than it's worth, I just left it there.

So norbie you just looped yours?

I made a rubber undertray that extends from the front lip to up to the sump- forcing all air through the radiator and intercooler.

I'm using the standard MA61 intercooler and engine fan, with a big 600x400x76mm intercooler and the temp gauge didn't budge on the track....

I just disconnected the water lines, no need to loop anything.

You must have looped the lines or blocked them, otherwise you would have a huge water leak!

I suspect u looped them / bypassed the cooler.

i think he is talking about looping/joining the water lines around the oil cooler. otherwise there would be a large coolant leak.

    cheers

This itself sounds like a good idea. It's a similar setup to what my JZA80 has from the factory. Between that, an undertray and your new MA61 radiator you shouldn't have any issues.

Well yes I blocked off some stuff, still no looping involved. I suppose you could connect both coolant hoses together to form a sort of "loop", but that whole circuit becomes redundant once the water-oil cooler is no longer in use.

will having thermo fans on at 40km/h+ cause a restriction to the ram air at all?
