It won't "drop in", but I'm certain it could be made fit with a bit of modifying mounts, driveshafts and tailshaft
Hi,
I would like to know if anyone has heard of someone having success with fitting a 3S-GTE ST215W engine into an 1995 AE series corolla. The corolla is a 4WD 5sp diesel. Any comments or am I dreaming?

I am the sun
the 3S is also quite a but taller so I'm not sure how easy it is to fit.
I've seen them fit into AE9* corollas before, but it's not easy.
what's your budget? With the right budget almost anything can be done.
I very much doubt the 'rolla's drivetrain is up to handling the 3s, so you'd need to factor that in too.
if you've budgeted less than ~$15k you can probably keep dreaming (depending on how mujhco f htis you plan to do yourself)
Fensport have put 3SGTEs into AE101 FX-GTs (basically a 3-door version of our AE101/102 Seca, so shares the same front end as the ADM AE10x, as opposed to the 101 Levin imports). I don't think they've been 4WD though, but it shouldn't make too much of a difference.
Was a lot more than just bolt-in though, but it should be able to be done.

In the UK and Europe you can get the 4WD versions of the Corolla/Matrix/Blade or whatever it is now. Ive always wondered about an entire GT4 drivetrain in one.Originally Posted by Hiro
That said, its far from drop in, and would be a lot of custom fabbing.

I believe that's what the rally corollas are. They imported 4WD chassis base models from Japan and went from there.Originally Posted by takai
EDIT: and it's called the Auris
It makes a whole lot more sense than just doing it from scratch.

What about using the Tercel setup?
Tercel engine is mounted longitudinally.

I always thought the tercel was an east west setup I am happy to be wrong though
I'm referring to this one, which to my knowledge is the only tercel to have made it to Australia (which is what I thought was being referred to given it's 4WD).

By the looks of it every other Tercel was transverse.
Back on topic - while not having any type of evidence, I would highly doubt the Tercel 4WD drivetrain would be anywhere near strong enough for a 3S-GTE (unless the driver of the car was me).

Thanks for the replies, great info for me to use.
I have been talking with the boys at Toyo Parts and they believe that the engine mounts are the same and physically the engine will fit in and the gearbox will bolt straight up with the 3sgte engine. They did say they it would take a couple of days of work to install and modify a loom and reprogramme the ecu. I would fit the majority of the mechanical side with my own mechanic. The diesel fuel tank will have to be removed and purged and new fuel lines (maybe) and pump fitted. They said mechanically there should be no probs with the install and it should pass the engineering cert. process.
Or I have the option of dropping in a silver top. I would do most of the work myself along with my mechanic mate who owns an auto shop. A fairly straight forward install with a front cut from the same era.
I discussed this with the boys at work yesterday. Majority said go the 3sgte and the rest said keep it simple and drop in the silver 20 Valve. I have an ae95 4WD corolla wagon which I am registering this week after RWC so I will have a daily runner.
What would you guys do? Go the silver top or the 3sgte?
I was thinking about purchasing a Caldina. But if things go well with a few basic mods I should end up with a sub 1200kg 300hp 4WD sleeper. I already own the car body, mechanically it is fine bar the nuked diesel donk. So I am budgeting about $8-9k for the front cut and install.
Anyone have any rear Venetian blinds and lace doilies for sale?
Cheers Pete and thanks again for your help.
