    Default R154 Input Shaft Length

    Hey guys,

Just making a thread to discuss various input shaft lengths for R154 gearboxes. In particular, this may pave the way for adapters between bellhousings for a W58 and the 1UZ, which would enable people who may have investment in the W58 bellhousing dont have to throw everything out.

The theory is the M-series and JZ-series may be different lengths.

More when my laptop is up and running tomorrow!

    Discuss!

    Cheers,
    Nathan

I've only heard of a circa 190mm length - was not aware there was a different length in R154s.
(in contrast to a W58 at ~160mm, with a 32mm difference wrt R154). I don't have the exact measurements though.
The adapter question has been posed by Linden in the past...

I'm also not aware of different R154 input shaft lengths...

The bellhousing length for the M series and JZ series are different tho, the JZ is shorter as the crank is somewhat recessed / the block pronounced in comparison to the M series...

Is that what you are thinking of?

    Cheers

When Neil said that JZ R154's are 25mm shorter, thats the first I've ever read anything to say that (Wilbo, go to Bretts 3RZ thread, Ed links to this quote)

Sure, the bellhousing is shorter, but I've never heard about the shaft.

As for the lengths, I quickly measured today
    W58 - ~160mm
    R154 - ~190mm

I'll get a better look soon.

Might possibly explain the differing adapter lengths you and Linden were coming up with though?

Nah, I'm getting the same as Linden.
    Ed's measurements were different.

And judging by that bellhousing pic its an MA70 R154 he's playing with.

Also, I'd say there would have to heaps of people who have converted MA70's to JZA70's and retained the MA70's R154, and just put a JZ bellhousing on it.

when i was reseaching the adapter i remember talking to marks 4wd adapters and they mentioned a 19mm spacer was needed on certain boxes but IIRC it was between g52 and r151 as most of there stuff is to suit 4WDs.

R154s input shafts are all same length, part no. 33301-14020 =ma70 thru to jzx90

Interesting to note, I wonder what Neil was talking about then with this comment:
"One thing I will at least advise to Nathan is....
    7M R154 has a 25mm longer input shaft than all other R154's.
    ( So be careful )"

Truck boxes (R151 etc) have a different shaft length but I've never heard of differences between R154's, and as above lots of people have done the MA70-JZA70 conversion with just a bellhousing swap.

there are other P/Ns for R154 inputs also but they are all same length, maybe they changed the bearing sizes or something (cant be arsed checking).

so is there any real interest in these adapters yet?
last time i had a couple of maybe's but i couldnt be arsed making 10 or more and just having them sitting as dead stock.

    cheers

I'm definetly interested Linden but it would come back to price. My 1UZFE conversion is almost definetly going to have to be W58 initially, so if I could down the track go R154 with minimal effort I'd be keen.
