may be up to the task but for the sake of $200 (and an hour or so in time) for a drop in walbro why risk it?
Hi all
Does anyone know if the stock fuel pump in my 89 mx83 has the goods to keep ze liquid gold up to my 2jzgte? Its relatively stock, with a little more boost/ exhaust etc.
If not can anyone suggest an easy replacement?
thanks
Blake

Tis OK to leave the stock pump in to start it,
but Linden is right, peace of mind in this case isn't that expensive!

walbro fuel pump would be the way to go, 'cheap and easy'
though i did own a ma61, standard pump with a 1jz and about 290rwhp but was starting to lean out (though barely drove it and didnt ever give it much boost) walbro was going to be the next upgrade.

surely itd be fine to drive to dubbo and back wouldnt it? Id rather spend my time doing neccessary things to get the thing driving first...

It will be OK if you don't nail it. Remember though it only needs to lean out once and you can kiss your bottom end goodbye.

i run the 2j on the stock Z12 pump (23yr old pump!) for a few weeks. no catastrophic failures to report. that was on stock boost however
i put the whinebro in when i put the boost controller and FCD in
hello
Hey,
NO. The stock 7M pump will not flow enough fuel for a stock 2J. I tried to run my 1JZGTE on my stock 7M pump, and the pump did not flow enough. I put in a Walbro 255ltr/hr pump in, and it took all of 2 hours. Just remember to use some sort of insulator (Fuel Proof) around the pump when you mount it on the bracket, as it is pretty noisy without it. I just used S/S hose clamps to secure the pump to the bracket, and the noise of the pump travels up the bracket, and is amplified by the tank itself, worse when you have less than 1/4 of a tank!

YES IT WILL FLOW ENOUGH FUEL (if the 89 is the same as the 92).
My 2JZ-GTE ran without problems on the 1992 MX83 Grande fuel pump.
It delivered 222rwkw at ~12:1 AFR, suggesting the pump delivers sufficient amounts of fuel at 13PSI with stock management.
Nilezy, I'd suggest that if you had problems with fuel delivery your pump was fkd.
A VVTi 1JZ does not use as much fuel as a 2JZ-GTE so you should've had no problem if there was nothing wrong with your pump. (And there's graphs to show VVTi 1JZs delivering circa 200rwkw on factory MX83 pumps with safely rich AFRs).
Having said that, I completely agree it's an easy risk to mitigate - you're playing with an almost 20 year old component - the risk is up to you.

As stated should be fine for near stock boost , But in terms of flow rate the stock 2JZ-GTE pump is twice that of the MX 83 pump , i was shocked at the flow of the 2J pump , is like not that far behind the walbro .
Dave
the only reason i suggest walbros over the factory 2j pump is the difference in price, 2j pump= sore arse while walking away from the counter.
as stated 2hrs + $200 and its job done, no need to worry about if it may fail.
Moss, you=tightarse. how often did you change oil in the thing (topups excluded) ?

Honestly just cut the cut the floor and then make a tin plate to cover it , ive done every old toyota this way and would never drop the tank again. You just make a small hole first and then cut your square out to suit. the hole will be like 150X200 mm . The first one always takes longer to do .
This is how all new cars are made now .
