Something i found interesting on the Castrol Lube guide

    Corolla 1978 to 1985 RWD 1300-3k/1600-4a

    Notes
    266
Imported 2-3 speed, use CASTROL TQF, 4.7 or 5.3 litres dry fill; Australian Prod. 3-speed, use CASTROL TQ DIII, 4.7 litres dry. From late 1983 or early 1984, imported automatic transmissions with dipstick marked "Cool, Hot and Dexron II", use only CASTROL TQ DIII; earlier models with dipstick marked "Cold and Hot", use only CASTROL TQF.

The A40 was definitely made by Aisin-Warner, effectively a joint venture with borg-warner
I could be wrong but i think the older corollas had the jap Toyoglide A30 3speed

Locally built Toyotas were required to have a certain percentage of parts sourced locally, so the autos could very well be local made trimatics.
Maybe see if the ID codes on the A40 matches with any of these:

Man ,all K motors had trimatics and all A motors had the A40 aisan warner JAP box , Trimatics were all US or Aussie built . Yes the A40 can be strenthend because the 4A used the weakest version of it with the least amount of clutch plates inside it . You may be able to bolt a 4 sp A43D to the A40 bellhousing and have a 4 Sp auto.

hey guys I've got an ae71 corolla 3spd auto sitting in my shed at home which i bought to run behind a 20v silvertop. I bought it off Peter Robinson from oakleigh a supposed corolla guru who said it was a jatco 3spd. I'll take some pics of it tomorrow and post them up, as I am interested to find out exactly what this box is.

yeah peter is in oakleigh. Seems like a knoweldgable fella. I will be running this in a suzuki sierra so it should be good.

does anyone know the gear ratios for the A40?

Also people were saying that the 4age 20 has an 8 bolt pattern on the crank whereas the A40 only has a 6. can anyone confirm this?

been a long time between drinks

6 and 8 bolts....the crank in particular has 8 bolt holes on the 20v, the early 4AC motors will only have 6.

    my 4AGE 100kw has 8 bolts, its pre-decessor the 4AFC only had 6.

i used a 20v flexplate (8 bolt) to drive my auto - exact same size and torque convertor hole spacing as the original (6 bolt) 4AFC flex plate

Well finally got some time to work on my car today and have taken some pictures of the AE71 (1984) corolla 3spd auto box I have plus the driveplate that came with my 4age 20v.

You can see that the auto plate is a six hole design as is the engine flywheel although it also shows the 8 bolt crankshaft clearly as well. CVAP in shepparton delivered this engine for me and I asked if I was getting the right flywheel for it to fit the ae71 3spd but am not sure if that flywheel was standard on the engine as it came from japan or if it was added on by CVAP after my initial inquiry.

Model number for the AE71 3spd Auto

    6 bolt design

    Auto side profile

    Auto front/side profile

    4AGE 20v Silvertop Driveplate - possibly a 20v auto driveplate not sure.

4AGE 20v Silvertop engine - was a transverse mounted engine from japan. not exactly sure what car it was out of.
