AE71 A40/Trimatic 3spd Automatic Q's?

I have searched the forums and I have the understanding now that the A40 3spd Auto box found behind the 4A-C powered AE71 Corolla's is indeed a Trimatic. Can anyone confirm that they are the same internally as the Holden Trimatic? Has anyone bothered to strengthen them at all? Are there different stall converter options available anywhere? etc? etc? Before I get flamed I realise there are definately other good transmission alternatives (ie. T-50 or W5X series manual boxes) out there as well. The reason I ask is that I am considering the possibility of attempting to strengthen an A40 "Trimatic" for a current 4A-GTE application. Any knowledge on the above would be greatly appreciated.

I have just been trying to find a auto trans to suit a 4ag , and the info you got about trimatic in AE71 is incorrect, i have been told by a number of trans shops the trimatic was in a ke55,the trimatic is a TH180. AE71's have a asia warner/ bog warmer or somthing like that.

id like to have proof that im wrong, cause i want a trimatic behind mine. And yes the ke55 trimatic is same internals as holden.

I did a bit of searching on this forum and on others on the net and found that the AE71 auto box is in fact made by aisin/borg warner and it has also been dubbed the 3 speed Trimatic. Check this thread out...

And according to most of the people who posted in the thread the locally delivered AE71 (Aussie one) has the Trimatic 3 speed behind the 4A.

Can anyone correct me on this? or verify this?

I was reading a Toyota manual some time ago and it stated that Aussie spec AE71's had a choice of 3 different auto boxes, 2 different 3sp and a 4sp, i don't know how accurate this thing was as it was pretty old and not a genuine Toyota manual, but its just something to through out there and concider.

blacktopspirit - thanks for the info, does it state what the two different types of 3 speed autos are?

too_quick - yes i believe they have, but are of no use to me unless the ae71 auto bellhousing will bolt to it, or I bother to make up an adapter plate.

No it just said one was the Jap box and the other was the Aussie spec

Ah ok. From what I am told the aussie spec ones were just a holden trimatic with a toyota bellhousing. Can anyone confirm this?

And in confirm, you mean have one in the car or shed, so we can see a pic, because thats what im after if they did make them.

good call toymaz. I rang up an importer today and he was not too sure either, but the boxes go incredibly cheap. Either way I am told that the valvebody operation is the same principle as the trimatic so I should beable to manualise it successfully and locate stronger internals (clutches, band, etc).

Exactly what i thought , all AE71 autos had the A40 and not the trimatic.
I was doing auto conversions on these 15 years ago and allways only could get the jap box.

cambelt1 - oh and did you ever strengthen or rebuild/play with the a40 internally? if so I have some questions for you.
