The later the model, the better it will be. Wasn't until the mid-late 90's that you started seeing some economical auto's (ie not power zapping slouches).

Then again not there's much in terms of 4 cyl rwd either.... You might have to use a BMW E36 auto unless your 4ag is Turbo which then you'ld be better off with a 6 Cyl Auto-box to handle the torque with minimum inertial resistance.

yes my 4ag is turbo, and yeah will be used for drags, why auto? have you ever been in a good one, then you will know why, I don't know if the trimatics people talk of in toyotas are the same as holden or not, may have to enquire.
    cheers

Definitely go with a Holden V6 or V8 Auto then. There is plenty of experience out there with modifying these boxes so the work will be reasonably cheap and reliable.

AE71s autos apparently came with trimatics behind them, that should make it really easy for you if thats true

I spoke to 2 trans shops , and they both said that trimatics only came out in kE55 Aust Assem 75-81 1.3 and 1.6 engine ...so the trans book said anyway, so if thats the case im f@#ked cause it won't bolt to 4a, thats only if they are correct though, Ae71 are ment to have an asia warner.
I'll keep looking into it though.
    cheers

I thought the ae71 had a toyota auto, A3XX or something along those lines.

I have only seen trimatics behind k motors in the Toyota scene.

well, both trans shops are wrong then
KE55 only had 1.3L engine, and yes had the traumatic.
KE70 only had 1.3L engine and yes, had the traumatic also.

they have "half bellhousings" iirc, with the front half being cast iron? adn the rear being part of the box? or maybe i am wrong on that.

some coronas also had traumatics iirc.

which box did the AE86 autos have with the 4AC?

both said ke55 from experence, book said 1.3 and 1.6.
Either way if its a 1.3 its not a 4a is it? an a40 may have been in ae86, the trans i want if fitted to a 4a is TH180.

    no such thing as a 1.6L KE55, a 1.3L is a 4K engine

    The Auto AE71 had an Aisan-Warner A40 3speed box.

Something i was looking to try but never got around to was to mate up the bell house to a 4speed A40D from an rt142 corona.

i think you should bite the bullet, pick a trans that can but built with good shifts and has good life, and then make bellhousing for it. perhaps convertor availability and ability to be built to your requirements is a factor
it doesn7t have to be pretty, just strong.

If you are serious about going auto then a good start would be to work out what peak torque figures you are reallistically going to get from your engine then use that to decide on a gearbox. No use running a big auto when you dont need it, as the parasitic loses will out weigh any benefits.

If you are wanting to strengthen the auto and run a transbrake then it would be a good idea to talk to a specialist to find out what parts are available for what autos. E.g. make sure the trimatics that were run in the Toyotas have interchangeable internals with the 'trick bits' available for the holden transmissions.
