It is a temperature sensor should be wired to your ecu
sorry no pic but its easy to find;
on the right side of the gearbox the 2 lines that supply tranny fluid to the radiator for 'temperature adjustment', the front line (which i think is the supply and the other line is the return becuase it goes just above the sump) there is a screw in sensor where the line is attached to the gearbox housing (like a temp sensor) with a plug and wires plugged into it.
anyone know what this sensor is for? and do i need it, looks like a good place to screw in an aftermarket temp sensor.

Yep, and the computer will need the temp signal for it to shift into overdrive. Without the signal it won't shift.
The 2JZ Auto must be different.
Coz all the other Toyota auto's do not have this sensor, and they use the engine temp sensor to determine the OD shift.

hello
Yeah the auto is different to the older ones. The newer autos have this sensor mounted internally.

thanks brett i have been looking for that pdf for ages.
mos:
is the sensor wired up? the car seems to take a very short time to 'warm up' ie it will shift into overdrive whithin 5 mins of driving and the water temp (factory) guage hardly has moved.
if the transmission temp gets too hot will i get a warning light, or will it be the o/d light flashing?

Prob the overdrive lamp flashing as theres no overtemp output from the ecu .
