    Default VZ/MZ block strenght

I'm deciding on a v6 for my next project. My choices are 3VZ-FE/5VZ-FE or a 1MZ-FE. Either option i go i'll be forging the bottom end and probably some cams/head work. My plans are either a TO4Z or GT42R, and i want to achieve around 600rwhp.

What i'm needing to know is which of these 3 engines is best suited to trying to make this sort of power. I would much more prefer to use the 1mz because of it's alloy block, to save weight. I'v found a few cars in the US running about 450-500 on the 1mz with no problems. You'd expect the VZ cast iron blocks to be substantially stronger though.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

3VZ blows head gaskets - probably a non issue for you given that you'll be rebuilding it.

MZ is open deck block I think.

Check out my members rides thread for the 165, I went with the 1mz, I have seen similar power figures out of both, however, the 1mz being all alloy is much lighter (it is lighter than the 3s it is replacing).

There are many advantages of the 1mz over the vz, it is simply a more modern engine. It does however suffer from weak pistons (apparently) but if you are rebuilding with a forged bottom end then that wouldn't matter...

Definately go with the 1mz-Fe if its not much more $$$ then the 5vz. The newer the cylinder Heads, the better they flow essentially. You won't gain much in terms of Turbo spool either from the extra 0.4L's due to the older design of the Head.

Rep points are for those who feel inadequate in other areas !

Cheers for the feedback guys. I think i'm gonna settle for the 1mz-fe then.

MZ would be my pick....however, a reliable 600rwhp is a big ask of any smaller capacity engine so i hope you have deep pockets.

    What is the intended use?

Also from what I understand I think tristan is using a twin sequential setup? A GT28 and a GT35 from memory or something close to that, also seemed to make decent power.

If your plans involve that sw20, I have been talking to a mob in canada who make a custom mount for both those blocks, and not a bad price! PM me for details if your keen!

Yer this is intended for my mr2. It's gonna be used for mainly street use, some occasional drag runs.

Why 600rwhp for street use....even 400rwhp is pretty well unusable and damned scarey in a MR2?

600rwhp would be it's max for the drags/dyno, i'll be happy with a 450-500rwhp for everyday use.
