my dad might be able to organise something like that with the Go-Kart business

the ones he sells a lot of is the Alfano systems

    http://www.alfano-usa.com/Alfano/fun.html

as long as you can mount the little sensor low enough to pick up the strips on the track anything like that will work.

I need a list of keen people for the lap timers. Have a price for minimum buys of 10, time unit AND IR transmitter as a kit. Looking at $396 incl GST + freight. Thats for the light TG. Normally $475 + GST etc.

So give me some names. One thing that was stressed is that they are coming direct from manufacturer and serial tracked. Apparently he has issues with some buying from US sites and claiming warranties.

how does it do the timing??

most MyChron systems i have seen in go-karting need a transmitter placed somewhere around the track on a tripod, with the receiver on the car in direct sight (uses Infrared i think)

Whilst others (like the alfano i posted) use magnietic strips that are around pretty much every bitumen track.

Can I ask why they are so expensive against the ones bought direct from AIM in the US given the current trade rates?

I'm interested but having just spent up on the camera GB, I'll need a few months for this one

Nathan - yep these ones use a transmitter, but they operate on a common frequency, so if a few people buy them, then they can be set up to give split times around the track

Yeah that was the trick with go-karts as well.

It doesn't mention if the reciever on the car needs to be in line of sight of the transmitter, or whether it can be mounted somewhere in the car

The details on the Aust site are less but the US site says it's IR line of sight. Transmitter comes on a tripod to be placed in the position of your choice. Extras can be purchased to provide split times or from what I understand they aren't matched to the receiver so thre of you can get together and use them for split times as it's only reactive to the beam.

As for pricing I only phoned them, didn't write their price book so don't buy it if you don't like it. I just thought I'd throw the cash up front if their was enough interest with deposits. As for sourcing from the US, see my earlier post re warranty claiming.

I still fail to see how US$275 + delivery and local warranty support comes to AU$475 + GST

You'd get the US one landed as a single unit for under AU$350... add to that bulk purchase discount, wholesale cost and bulk shipping that AIM Australia would have access to and you're looking well under that still.

I'd be on to them a bit more to lower the price was all that I was suggesting. $396 isn't bad but I think it could be better.

The local warranty support does sound good though, plus if we get a couple of lap timers and a few split timers between us (we each buy one or the other) then we would have a pretty good pool of this gear for whenever it is needed.

this picture seems to indicate that they can be used for IR or magnetic receivers but I can't find details anywhere about the magnetic capabilities

if the receiver has the magnetic part in built it will pick up the strips that are laid in the track

I know wakefield has at least one on the main straight from go-karting, and probably has another 1 or 2 around the track as well.

Thats his price I guess. Unless we get 200+ like the Porsche club did then he'll do better. But then you're fronting the money.

And thats the external powered model too, the battery one's cheaper but then you have to keep batteries. External 5-16v.

Hmm, i like the sounds of these things, they've been on the wishlist for a while... unfortunately i'm the sort of person that gambles with no warranty if it's enough of a bargain. My $7k tv i paid <$2.5k for is a prime example. Sure it died 2 weeks shy of 12months but it only cost $300 to fix.

$275 vs $400 is kinda in that region too... though if a buy is happening and it's a matter of supporting and helping others get numbers etc i'd probably join in, provided i can afford it at the time.

Are you looking to make this happen in time for this day? We're talking a week and a half...

    ps Phil, money's come through.
