i would suppose that if it were an overhead cam engine, hot/cold clearance would not be as critical because the cam stays with the head.
However i am still certain that the valve clearance grows larger as the engine gets warmer
Fast foo i will back you up with this 1 it is a common problem with overtightening the rocker cover that the rockers touch the covers.
As for valve clerances Hot v Cold Everything expands when hot so Clearances decrease.
