IMO, go the turbo... a year and a half is a short time to plan a good conversion in. You will need to sort a turbo, manifold, EFI, aftermarket ECU, Fuel system (high pressure pump, feeder pump etc) and make all of it fit. You will need to build a motor to be able to take the turbo... go overboard on the build and not the turbo, and you will have a lot of fun for a long time.
I would suggest getting a 22RE from a Celica or Corona and start building from there. Plan your day, and talk to an engineer first, so you know what kind of brake upgrades etc you may also need. Then you can pull the car from the road for a short period and install the new motor properly. In that time you can also save for a twin plate clutch to make your driving much easier.
