Unhappy uh oh.... grinding noise from clutch?

On my way to work this morning I started getting a grinding/clunking noise through the drivetrain. Its only when I back off the throttle, if I am accelerating even lightly I get no noise.

When I clutch in and coast I get no noise so I don't think its driveshaft, diff or gearbox.... happy to be proven wrong though.... can't remember if i tried engaging neutral and coasting....

I've been getting a bit of extra vibration through the shifter lately and previous to that a ticking noise unless my foot was resting on the clutch (bearing noise maybe?) if that helps?

    Anyone got any suggestions?

could be the carrier bearing on the clutch...when did you change the clutch last?

    was the bearing done then?

I've not touched the clutch since buying the car a year and a half ago.

its a 1jz->w58 with a 5puck clutch of some sort if it helps.

Thanks mr 1jz, sounds cheap to fix

But which is the carrier bearing? is it same as throwout/release?

The spring/cushioned hub on the clutch disk is coming apart.
If by 'carrier bearing' he actually means the release/throw-out/thrust bearing, then that is definitely not it - it does its job by pushing & doesn't care about whether the drive-train is accelerating, decelerating, cruising or sitting still, and it is not dependent or affected by the load on the engine.

Also might be the pressure plate coming apart.

The 'extra vibration' also means that it isn't something like a relatively small concentric and not even in major contact at the time part like the 'thrust' bearing.

hmm, I hope its a cheap bearing.

First time I've pulled a gearbox out, so should be interesting to see what I can see....

Ring spanners FTW with those dude, otherwise a really long socket extension where you can attach the rachet down by the gearbox for the leverage required - they will cost a pretty penny, and you'll only use them irregularly, but fuck me, they're worth it!

Angry Re: uh oh.... grinding noise from clutch?

like the others my bet is the thrust bearing
i have just changed mine , in my case, the ball bearings in the thrust bearing had siezed causing the thrust bearing chewing through the pressure plate fingers

Alrighty, I'll give it a go at getting those bolts cracked this evening.

Don't really want to have to move the engine about, but perhaps thats the way to go....

    cheers guys
